Problem of WD passport 320GB usb detection

I just bought an external hard drive WD Passport 320GB

My problem is that it is not detected by my PC with Windows XP SP3. Yet it is detected on the laptop on my Vista. So I formatted the HDD from my Vista pc but it did not change. When I plug my HDD on my pc, it reports no error in the device manager. It gets detected but after 3 sec it disconnects itself and it begins again

    My motherboard is ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA
Chipset of the card: VIA Apollo PT880 Ultra

    Can you help me?

Have you already connected to other USB devices on this PC?
You looked on the WD site if there was not a utility or software to install on windows XP?

Hmm it's really all that strange.

You try to connect to a port on your box or directly to the rear, a port on the motherboard?

Probably a lack of current from the USB port. Try another port, those at the back of the motherboard, or to those in front, as appropriate.

If you use a USB extension cable, remove them. See also if other USB peripherals draw too much of power

I had the same problem as yours, but on my notebook with both Vista and Windows 7 (both 64 bit). Found out that the same drive worked fine on my desktop (Vista 64 bit) without any problems.
In both cases I was using a long USB cable and not the short USB cable that came with the drive. Once I switched to the short USB cable it worked fine on the notebook.
Guess it has something to do with the drive not getting sufficient power from the USB port on the notebook with the longer USB cable.
    Hope this helps.
