    Try uninstalling them from Device Manager, then rebooting and let Windows find and install "New Hardware".If that fails, try from the Registry edit .

    hen you have a Registry error, which often happens with XP.

    Follow these steps outlined earlier in this thread,

    Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click O.K)

    Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

    Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

    Quit Registry Editor.

    NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software.

    Warning: The methods discussed below require you to make direct changes to the Windows registry. Due to the importance of the registry in the working of your Windows computer, it is essential that you act very careful while making this edits. For safety, it is recommended that you back up the registry before proceeding. To make a registry backup, you may either use the Windows Registry Editor or a third-party, advanced registry tool.

    1. Uninstall all CD writing and recording programs installed on your computer. You may do this by using Add or Remove Programs, or a reliable third-party program uninstaller, such as Perfect Uninstaller.
    2. Open Start menu, select Run, type regedit, and then press Enter to open the Registry Editor window.
    3. Navigate to the following registry entry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965- E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    4. In the right-pane, right-click on UpperFilters and delete it.
    5. Confirm your decision when a confirmation message box is displayed.

    Note: Do not delete UpperFilters.bak
    6. Next, right-click on LowerFilters and delete it.
    7. Confirm your decision when a confirmation message box is displayed.

    Note: Do not delete LowerFilters.bak
    8. Restart your system.
    9. Reinstall the CD recording and writing programs and try to use them again.

    To prevent error code 41 and other error messages that are generated due to registry problems, it is recommended that you perform regular preventive maintenance of the registry. Problems in the registry usually occur due to the accumulation of invalid, obsolete, and other junk information within it.

    Re: Optical drive error code 41

    Please perform the following steps mentioned below
    1. start the computer. put disk to access
    Ensure the disc is clean and free of smudges, fingerprints and scratches, and that it is inserted correctly.
    NOTE: The label should be facing up for CD and single sided DVD discs.

    Try a different disc in the drive.
    IMPORTANT: If another disc works in the drive, the disc may be damaged in some way or is not readable.

    Turn off the computer.
    Unplug the computer from the AC power outlet for 30 seconds, then plug it back into a known working AC outlet.
    If the drive is removable, ensure the drive is properly connected and has power.
    Turn on the computer.
    If the computer is a notebook, ensure the drive is enabled in Power Management.
    Ensure no hardware resource conflicts are present.
    Ensure a third-party application is not blocking access to the drive.
    Ensure no unsupported WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI drivers are loading.
