    Thumbdrive read only

my thumbdrive is coming up as read only; it did not come this way, worked fine until yesterday, when in the middle of my work, it became read only, tried it on several computers, no dice; tried reformatting, wont let me because it reads as read only; no external tab on it to switch; any advice?

Click properties. On the box that opens, near the bottom you should see Read only, Hidden, and Archive. If the read only box is checked, uncheck it. The only box to really have checked and have full capability with the file while the computer can have some too is Archive.

says it cannot format due to the read only status

no "read only" box, it's not an individual file, its the whole thumb drive; external drives do not have those boxes at the bottom of the properties window

    Re: Thumbdrive read only

I have had file permissions prevent me from completely deleting files from USB based drives. I use a terminal and manually delete the files using 'sudo rm'. This overrides the file permission issue and deletes the file. The files are most likely located on the USB drive in a .Trash* folder.
