Try installing Deep burner & see if this tool helps you!
I have used this software & it works fine with my laptop since it really a light weight program.
I think this is a better option than the windows CD writing utility.
Haven't you tried till now with utility like Nero and all? if not then you should try first. Have you tried of upgrading or reinstalling your windows XP? If the laptop is still under warranty then take the advantage of that.. good luck

Well I think you need to check in your device manager if you see your CD writer in error state. If yes then try installing the writing software for it! (I mean a good burning software and the required drivers). You can also run a Xp repair install.
Hope this helps!
Cable select can go out and seen like the cd/rom or even hard drive has died, when it actually has another rout of transportation for data. Cable select can burn out kind of like a fuse burning out. Master is another way for data to travel. just open the computer and look. This will cause a lot of Hard drive errors such as can't boot into the Operating system or can't get my cd to play. It can even be intermitten errors not just total failure. Every one also needs to remember to Defrag and SCANDISK-Error checking for the hard drive. this will prolong the life.
Well thanks for the prompt reply guys!
I have this laptop in warranty but the person takes 3-4 days to visit my place & I will try your suggestions right now & let you know what happens.
1. Going to install Deep burner.
2. Checking device manager.
3. Nero wont get installed since i have it installed already & its not working properly don't know why/
4. I think last option I have is to go with a repair install for XP since its the Xp writing utility which is also not working in my case.
Is it possible that my writer gone bad in just 1 year?
Try using another program than windows to burn your CDs. My drive can only write at a certain speed and windows sometimes tries to burn faster, which makes it so that the CD doesn't burn.
Nero, or another such program will probably give you a more detailed error message that can help you fix the problem, you also will have control over the writing speed.
