Need an external hard drive

Why do you want to do that? Is your computer working properly, or something went wrong?

Whatever maybe, just take your disc and put it in a box outside, that's all, even if it is a portable disk.

The easiest method and least expensive is to use your disk drive. Buy a external housing USB 2.5" disk or SATA IDE. Put your disk drive inside it and connect it on another PC. Now you can retrieve whatever is on your disk.

However if you still want an external disk, then find a box that you like (there are 36 manufacturers of hard drives), the type of connection you want (Firewire (1394), USB, eSATA), the physical size disk (2.5" or 3.5") and capacity (easily 200 to 750GB). Usually the price varies with the types of connections.
