    Samsung Galaxy S5 Troubleshooting Guide

    Insert SIM and battery

    Before you can use your phone, you need to insert your SIM and the battery.

    1. Remove the back cover
    • Turn the back of your phone towards you.
    • Take hold of the left side of the back cover and remove it.

    2. Insert your SIM
    • Place your SIM as illustrated next to the SIM holder.
    • Slide your SIM into the holder.

    3. Insert the battery
    • Place the battery in your phone, top first, matching the battery contacts with the phone contacts and press the battery into place.

    4. Replace the back cover
    • Place the back cover on your phone and press it into place.

    Activate Google account on phone

    A Google account gives you access to Gmail, Google Play and Google+ on your phone. Remember, you need to set up your phone for internet.

    1. Find "Google"
    • Slide your finger down the display starting from the top edge of your phone.
    • Press the settings icon.
    • Press Accounts.
    • Press Add account.
    • Press Google.

    2. Start activation
    • Press Existing.
    • To create a new account: Press New.
    • Follow the instructions on the display to create a new account.

    3. Activate Google account
    • Press Email and key in the username for your Google account.
    • Press Password and key in the password for your Google account.
    • Press arrow right.
    • Press OK.
    • Follow the instructions on the display to select settings for your Google account.

    4. Return to the home screen
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    Charge the battery
    You should charge the phone battery regularly to ensure that your phone is always ready for use.

    1. Connect the charger to your phone
    • Open the cover at the bottom of your phone.
    • Connect the charger to the socket and to a wall socket.
    • When the battery charging icon is displayed, charging is in progress.

    2. End charging
    • When the battery is fully charged, you can remove the charger from the wall socket and your phone.
    • When the phone is turned on, you can always see the battery power level on your display. The bigger the coloured section of the battery icon, the more power.

    Turn your phone on and off
    Remember, you need to insert your SIM and the battery in your phone before turning it on.

    1. Turn on your phone
    • Press On/Off until your phone is turned on.

    2. Enter PIN
    • Key in your PIN and press OK.
    • If your phone rejects the SIM:
    • Contact your distributor or service provider where you bought your phone.
    • Your PIN is used to protect your SIM from unauthorised use.
    • If you enter an incorrect PIN three times in a row, your SIM will be blocked.

    3. Turn off your phone
    • Press and hold On/Off.
    • Press Power off.
    • Press OK.

    Guide to phone keys and sockets

    The list below shows you what the different keys and sockets on your phone are used for.

    On/Off
    • Several functions are associated with On/Off:
    • Press On/Off to turn your phone on or off.
    • Press On/Off to turn on the screen lock.
    • Press and hold On/Off to access silent mode and flight mode.

    The Return key
    • Press the Return key to exit an active menu item or hide the keypad.

    The Application key
    • Press the Application key to view a list of the most recently used menu items and applications.

    The Home key
    • Several functions are associated with the Home key:
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.
    • Press and hold the Home key to search the internet.

    The Volume key
    • Several functions are associated with the Volume key:
    • Press the upper or lower part of the Volume key to adjust the ring volume.
    • Press the upper or lower part of the Volume key during a call to adjust the volume.
    • Press the upper or lower part of the Volume key to silence the incoming call alert.

    Socket
    • Connect the charger or data cable to the socket and to a wall socket or your computer's USB port.

    Headset socket
    • Connect the headset to the headset socket.

    Heart rate sensor
    • Place the tip of your finger on the heart rate sensor to check your heart rate when using S Health.

    Camera lens at the back of your phone
    • Point the camera lens at the back of your phone at the required object to take a picture or record a video clip.

    Camera lens at the front of your phone
    • Point the camera lens at the front of your phone at the required object during a video call.

    How to write text

    Text input is used in many of the phone functions, such as notes and messages.

    1. Introduction
    • You can select a number of settings when keying in text.
    • The following steps show you how to change writing language, turn on word suggestion and write text.
    • The following steps require that you're writing text and that the keypad is visible.
    2. Add writing language
    • Press and hold the field next to space until a pop-up menu is displayed.
    • Press the settings icon.
    • Press Select input languages.
    • Press the required language to add it.
    • Press the Return key.
    • The selected language determines which characters are available and the language used for word suggestion.
    3. Turn on word suggestion
    • Press Predictive text.
    • Press the indicator next to "Predictive text" until the function is turned on.
    • Press Personalised data until the function is turned on.
    • Press the Return key twice.
    • When you turn on word suggestion, words based on the letters you've keyed in are displayed.

    4. Write text
    • Slide your finger right or left on space to select the required language.
    • Press the letters to key in the required word.
    • A number of words based on the letters you've keyed in are displayed.
    • Press arrow right to see more words.
    • Press the required word to insert it.

    5. Write numbers and symbols
    • Press Sym.
    • Press the required numbers or the required symbols.
    • Press 1/2 to see more symbols.
    • Press ABC to return to text input.

    Select network

    You can set your phone to select a network automatically or you can select a network manually. If you select a network manually, your phone will lose network connection when the selected network is out of reach.

    1. Find "Network operators"
    • Slide your finger down the display starting from the top edge of your phone.
    • Press the settings icon.
    • Press More networks.
    • Press Mobile networks.
    • Press Network operators.

    2. Select option
    • Your phone searches for networks within range.
    • Select one of the following options:
    • Select network manually, go to 2a.
    • Select network automatically, go to 2b.
    2a - Select network manually
    • Press the required network.
    • The display will tell you if you have access to the network you've chosen.

    2b - Select network automatically
    • Press Select automatically.

    3. Return to the home screen
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    Select network mode

    You can select which network modes your phone should use. This selection influences the data speeds you can achieve.

    1. Find "Network mode"
    • Slide your finger down the display starting from the top edge of your phone.
    • Press the settings icon.
    • Press More networks.
    • Press Mobile networks.
    • Press Network mode.
    2. Select network mode
    • Press LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect), WCDMA/GSM (auto connect), WCDMA only or GSM only.
    • 3G (UMTS) or 4G (LTE) enables you to achieve higher data speeds than when using 2G (GSM).
    • If you select LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect), your phone automatically switches between the three network modes provided that you're within range of a 4G network.
    • If you select WCDMA/GSM (auto connect), your phone automatically switches between the two network modes provided that you're within range of a 3G network.
    • If you select WCDMA only, your phone can only connect to 3G networks.
    • If you select GSM only, you can't achieve high data speeds.

    3. Return to the home screen
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    Turn flight mode on or off

    You can turn off all wireless connections so your phone can’t cause any interference with sensitive equipment in a plane or a hospital. You can still use your phone when flight mode is turned on, but you can’t send messages or make calls.

    1. Turn flight mode on or off
    • Press and hold On/Off.
    • Press Flight mode to turn the function on or off.
    • Press OK.

    Turn use of PIN on or off

    The PIN protects your SIM from unauthorised use if your phone should get stolen. If use of PIN is turned on, it needs to be keyed in when you turn on your phone.

    1. Find "Set up SIM card lock"
    • Slide your finger down the display starting from the top edge of your phone.
    • Press the settings icon.
    • Press Security.
    • Press Set up SIM card lock.
    2. Turn use of PIN on or off
    • Press Lock SIM card to turn the function on or off.
    • Key in your PIN and press OK.
    • If an incorrect PIN is entered three times in a row, your SIM will be blocked. To unblock your SIM, you'll need to key in your PUK. The PUK can be obtained by contacting customer services.
    • PLEASE NOTE:
    • If the wrong PUK is entered ten times, your SIM will be blocked permanently. In this case, you need a new SIM from Vodafone.
    3. Return to the home screen
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    Turn use of phone lock code on or off

    The phone lock code protects the contents of your phone from unauthorised use. When the phone lock code is turned on, it needs to be keyed in every time you turn on your phone and when it has been in sleep mode.

    1. Find "Screen lock"
    • Slide your finger down the display starting from the top edge of your phone.
    • Press the settings icon.
    • Press Lock screen.
    • Press Screen lock.
    2. Select option
    • You can create several types of phone lock codes. The steps below describe three examples:
    • Create phone lock code using a pattern, go to 2a.
    • Create phone lock code using your fingerprint, go to 2b.
    • Create phone lock code using a PIN, go to 2c.
    2a - Create phone lock code using a pattern
    • Press Pattern.
    • Press and drag a point to connect at least four points.
    • Press Continue.
    • Repeat the selected phone lock code to confirm.
    • Press Confirm.
    • Key in a four-digit PIN and press Continue.
    • Key in the PIN again and press OK.
    2b - Create phone lock code using your fingerprint
    • Press Fingerprint.
    • Follow the instructions on the display to add a fingerprint.
    • Key in a password and press Continue.
    • Key in the password again and press OK.
    2c - Create phone lock code using a PIN
    • Press PIN.
    • Key in the required phone lock code and press Continue.
    • Key in the phone lock code again and press OK.

    3. Turn off use of phone lock code
    • Press None.

    4. Return to the home screen
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    Make a call

    You can make voice calls to other mobile phones or landlines.

    1. Select option
    • Select one of the following options:
    • Enter the number, go to 1a.
    • Find contact in the address book, go to 1b.
    • Find number on the call list, go to 1c.
    1a - Enter the number
    • Press Phone.
    • Press Keypad.
    • Key in the required number and press the call icon.

    1b - Find contact in the address book
    • Press Contacts.
    • Press the required contact.
    • The contact details are displayed.
    • Press the required number.
    1c - Find number on the call list
    • Press Phone.
    • Press Logs.
    • Press the required number.
    • Press the call icon.
    2. End call
    • Press End call.

    Answer a call

    When you receive a call, you can either answer it, reject it or silence the incoming call alert.

    1. Select option
    • Select one of the following options:
    • Answer call, go to 1a.
    • Reject call, go to 1b.
    • Silence the incoming call alert, go to 1c.

    1a - Answer call
    • Press and drag the accept call icon right.

    1b - Reject call
    • Press and drag the reject call icon left.
    • When you reject a call, the caller will hear a busy signal or be diverted to your voicemail.

    1c - Silence the incoming call alert
    • Press the upper or lower part of the Volume key when you get a call.
    • The incoming call alert is silenced without the caller hearing it, and the call continues until it's ended or diverted.

    Turn call waiting on or off

    When call waiting is turned on, you can answer a new call without ending your ongoing call.

    1. Find "More settings"
    • Press Phone.
    • Press the menu icon.
    • Press Settings.
    • Press Call.
    • Press More settings.

    2. Turn call waiting on or off
    • The current settings are displayed.
    • Press Call waiting to turn the function on or off.

    3. Return to the home screen
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    Turn your own caller identification on or off

    You can turn off your own caller identification, your number will then not be shown at the receiving end when you make a call. Your number is only hidden when you make voice calls not when you send messages.

    1. Find "Caller ID"
    • Press Phone.
    • Press the menu icon.
    • Press Settings.
    • Press Call.
    • Press More settings.
    • After a moment the current settings are displayed.
    • Press Caller ID.

    2. Turn your own caller identification on or off
    • Press Hide number or Show number.

    3. Return to the home screen
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    Create contact

    You can save your contacts in your phone's address book. You can save additional information to a contact such as email address and personal ring tone.

    1. Find "Contacts"
    • Press Contacts.

    2. Create contact
    • Press Contacts.
    • Press the new contact icon.

    3. Select address book
    • Press the drop down list above "Name".
    • Press Device.
    • If you select Device, the contact is created in your phone's address book.
    • If you select SIM card, the contact is created on your SIM.
    • If you select an account, the contact is attached to this account but is also displayed on your phone.

    4. Enter name
    • Press Name and key in the required name.

    5. Enter phone number
    • Press Phone number and key in the required phone number.
    • Press the drop down list next to the phone number.
    • Press the required number type.
    • If you key in the phone number with a + followed by the country code, you can also call contacts in the address book when you're abroad.

    6. Enter email address
    • Press the add icon next to "Email" and key in the required email address.
    • Press the drop down list next to the email address.
    • Press the required email type.

    7. Add more information
    • You can add more information to the contact. The following steps show two examples:
    • Assign picture, go to 7a.
    • Assign ring tone, go to 7b.

    7a - Assign picture
    • Press the picture icon.
    • To take a new picture:
    • Press Take picture.
    • Point the camera lens at the required object and press the camera icon to take the picture.
    • Press Save.
    • To assign a saved picture:
    • Press Image.
    • Go to the required folder.
    • Press the required picture.
    • Drag the frame to the required position to select the required detail.
    • Press Done.

    7b - Assign ring tone
    • Press Ringtone.
    • To assign your phone's current default ring tone:
    • Press Default ringtone.
    • Press OK.
    • To assign one of your phone's default ring tones:
    • Press the different ring tones to listen to them.
    • Once you've found a ring tone you like, press OK.
    • To assign one of your own ring tones:
    • Press Add.
    • Go to the required folder.
    • Press the different ring tones to listen to them.
    • Once you've found a ring tone you like, press Done.

    8. Save contact
    • Press Save.

    9. Return to the home screen
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    Copy contacts between your SIM and your phone

    You can copy contacts between your SIM and phone. This way, you won't lose your contacts if you change your SIM or phone.

    1. Find "Import/export"
    • Press Contacts.
    • Press the menu icon.
    • Press Settings.
    • Press Contacts.
    • Press Import/export.

    2. Select option
    • Select one of the following options:
    • Copy contacts from your SIM to your phone, go to 2a.
    • Copy contacts from your phone to your SIM, go to 2b.

    2a - Copy contacts from your SIM to your phone
    • Press Import from SIM card.
    • Press Device.
    • Press Select all.
    • Press Done.

    2b - Copy contacts from your phone to your SIM
    • Press Export to SIM card.
    • Press Select all.
    • Press Done.
    • Press OK to confirm.

    3. Return to the home screen
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    Save voicemail number

    You can save your voicemail number making it easy to call and listen to your voice messages.

    1. Find "Voicemail number"
    • Press Phone.
    • Press the menu icon.
    • Press Settings.
    • Press Call.
    • Press Voicemail settings.
    • Press Voicemail number.

    2. Save the voicemail number
    • Key in (prefix) 5 (your phone number) and press OK.

    3. Return to the home screen
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    Divert calls to voicemail

    To receive voice messages, you need to divert your calls to your voicemail.

    1. Find "Voice call"
    • Press Phone.
    • Press the menu icon.
    • Press Settings.
    • Press Call.
    • Press More settings.
    • After a moment the current settings are displayed.
    • Press Call forwarding.
    • Press Voice call.

    2. Select divert type
    • The current settings are displayed.
    • Press one of the following options:
    • Always forward
    • Forward when busy
    • Forward when unanswered
    • Forward when unreachable

    3. Divert calls to voicemail
    • Key in (prefix) 5 (your phone number) and press Enable.

    4. Return to the home screen
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    Call voicemail

    You can listen to the messages you've received on your voicemail. Remember, you need to save the voicemail number and divert calls to your voicemail.

    1. Call voicemail
    • Press Phone.
    • Press Keypad.
    • Press and hold 1 to call voicemail.

    2. Check voice messages
    • Follow the instructions from your voicemail.

    3. Return to the home screen
    • Press End call to end the call.
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    Cancel all diverts

    If you no longer wish to divert your calls to your voicemail or another number, you need to cancel the diverts.

    1. Find "Voice call"
    • Press Phone.
    • Press the menu icon.
    • Press Settings.
    • Press Call.
    • Press More settings.
    • After a moment the current settings are displayed.
    • Press Call forwarding.
    • Press Voice call.

    2. Cancel all diverts
    • The current settings are displayed.
    • Press one of the following options:
    • Always forward
    • Forward when busy
    • Forward when unanswered
    • Forward when unreachable
    • Press Disable.
    • Repeat until all diverts have been cancelled.

    3. Return to the home screen
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    A text message is a message that can be sent to other mobile phones. Your phone can send and receive text messages as soon as you've inserted your SIM. If this isn't the case, you can set up your phone for text messaging manually.

    • Press Settings.
    • Press Text messages.

    2. Save the message centre number
    • Press Message centre.
    • Key in +35387699989 and press OK.

    3. Return to the home screen

    • Press the new data connection icon.

    3. Enter data connection name
    • Press Name.
    • Key in Vodafone MMS and press OK.

    4. Enter APN
    • Press APN.
    • Key in mms.vodafone.net and press OK.

    5. Enter picture messaging server

    6. Enter IP address
    • Press MMS proxy.
    • Key in 10.24.59.200 and press OK.

    7. Enter port number
    • Press MMS port.
    • Key in 80 and press OK.

    8. Enter country code
    • Press MCC.
    • Key in 272 and press OK.

    9. Enter network code
    • Press MNC.
    • Key in 01 and press OK.

    10. Select authentication type
    • Press Authentication type.
    • Press PAP.

    11. Select APN type
    • Press APN type.
    • Key in mms and press OK.

    12. Select data bearer
    • Press Bearer.
    • Press Unspecified.

    13. Save data connection
    • Press the menu icon.

    14. Return to the home screen

    Write and send picture messages

    • Press the field next to the required audio file.
    • Press Done.

    6. Send the picture message
    • Press the send icon when you've finished your picture message.

    7. Return to the home screen
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    Set up your phone for email

    You can set up your phone to send and receive email messages from your email accounts. Remember, you need to set up your phone for internet.

    1. Find "Email"
    • Press Apps.
    • Press Email.

    2. Enter email address
    • Press Email address and key in your email address.
    • If an email account has been created already, do the following instead:
    • Press the menu icon.
    • Press Settings.
    • Press Manage accounts.
    • Press the add account icon.
    • Press Email address.
    • Key in your email address.

    3. Enter password
    • Press Password and key in the password for your email account.
    • Press Next.
    • If the display tells you that your email account has been set up, follow the instructions on the display to select more settings and finish the setup.

    4. Select server type
    • Press POP3 account.

    5. Enter username
    • Press the field below "Username" and key in the username for your email account.

    6. Enter incoming server
    • Press the field below "POP3 server" and key in the name of your email provider's incoming server.

    7. Turn off encryption of incoming email messages
    • Press the drop down list below "Security type".
    • Press None.

    8. Enter incoming port
    • Press the field below "Port" and key in 110

    9. Turn deletion of email messages on server on or off
    • Press the drop down list below "Delete email from server".
    • Press Never or When deleted from Inbox.
    • Press Next.

    10. Enter outgoing server
    • Press the field below "SMTP server" and key in mail.vodafone.ie

    11. Turn off encryption of outgoing email messages
    • Press the drop down list below "Security type".
    • Press None.

    12. Enter outgoing port
    • Press the field below "Port" and key in 25

    13. Turn off SMTP authentication
    • Press Require sign-in until the display tells you that the function is turned off.
    • Press Next.

    14. Select settings for retrieval of new email messages
    • Press the drop down list below "Sync schedule".
    • Press Manual or the required period.
    • Press the drop down list below "Peak schedule".
    • Press Manual or the required period.

    15. Turn email message synchronization on or off
    • Press Sync Email to turn the function on or off.

    16. Turn email message notification on or off
    • Press Notify me when email arrives to turn the function on or off.
    • Press Next.

    17. Enter email account name
    • Press the field below "Give this account a name (Optional)" and key in the required name.

    18. Enter sender name
    • Press the field below "Your name (Displayed on outgoing messages)" and key in the required sender name.

    19. Finish setup
    • Press Done.
    • Wait while your phone retrieves new email messages.

    20. Return to the home screen
    • Press the Home key to return to the home screen.

    Write and send email messages

    You can send and receive email messages from your email accounts. Remember, you need to set up your phone for email.

    1. Find "Email"
    • Press Apps.
    • Press Email.

    2. Select email account
    • Press the menu icon in the top left corner of the display.
    • Press Inbox below the required email account.

    3. Create email message
    • Press the new email message icon.

    4. Select recipient
    • Key in the first letters of the required contact.
    • Matching contacts are displayed.
    • Press the required contact.
    • Repeat the procedure to add more recipients.

    5. Enter subject
    • Press Subject and key in a subject for the email message.

    6. Write the text
    • Press the text input field.
    • Write the text for your email message.

    7. Attach file
    • Press the attachment icon.
    • Press My Files.
    • Go to the required folder.
    • Press the box next to the required file to select the file.
    • Press Done.

    8. Send the email message
    • Press the send icon when you've finished your email message.
