Media Sharing Guide for Android Devices

We all love to keep our favorite videos, music and picture in our pc, laptop or netbook. Everything is stored in your hard drive. But to share it with others we have to copy it from our pc to mobile or tablet pc. This is a time consuming process. Today we also have one more option for sharing files with people. It is online or cloud sharing. You have to keep your file on web and through internet connection you can show that to everyone. This is called as media streaming. All your multimedia files are first uploaded on the web and then they are access via application on your mobile or tablet or pc. 0But does that really work. Because at many places there is no high speed internet. To stream a video directly through internet requires good bandwidth. Or else the video or picture which you are trying to see will be appearing slowly. Now there is process available by which you can share a multimedia content of your pc on various devices. It is ideal for office and home.

It will be great if you can see all movies which are stored in your hard drive on your widescreen HDTV without copying or burning them to disc or simply messing with cables. What if everything works great on wifi? You can just turn on your TV and through remote you can checkout latest photos captured by you on a vacation or play your favorite holiday videos. The output on big screen is far better compare to what you seen on a small screen. For that you require a proper setup. We have much new technology today which has made our job easier in terms of media sharing. Media word here consists of all digital content like Video, Audio and Images. These three things are ideal choice for entertainment. In this guide we will move ahead with media sharing. We will checkout a set of different methods through which it is possible to stream your media content on different devices in various possible ways. It is not complicated enough but sometime it is a costly setup.

Because you have to buy certain stuff for that. Every now and then people purchase electronic items. Like TV, Blu Ray Player, Home Theater System, Mobile Phone, etc. Before buying you have to keep certain things in mind. So that you all your devices must be capable of accessing multimedia files stored in your pc. You can create a centralized media server by hooking up a 1Tb hard drive in your pc and use it for storage purpose only. Media Sharing here does not only means playing content from your pc to different devices. It is not associated with storage. You can also transfer content from your mobile, tablet, camera, etc to your pc. It is a complete sharing process.

First we will move ahead with some points that you have to keep in mind before buying product like TV, Home Theater System, Mobile Phone, Tablet, etc. So that in future your investment can save your money.
    • Buy Devices which offer you DLNA, NFC and other Media Sharing support.
    • For Blu-Ray Player or Home Theater System try to find devices with LAN and Wifi connectivity.
    • All devices must meet the latest standard of media sharing.
    • All devices must be capable of reading various type of audio/video format. This is a time saver. OR else you will need to keep on converting files into readable format.
• Choosing Android is the right option here. It has tons of file sharing options.
    • Windows sharing compatibility will be added advantage.
    • Go with devices that offer plug and play solution. Avoid messing with cables, CD and long setup. That is a waste of time.
    • Spending a bit higher amount in latest model instead of buying old one is not a good choice.

Above points will be helpful for you when you are out in the market to buy new stuff. Technology is getting simpler day by day. I had seen people today are still stuck with Bluetooth sharing. While powerful sharing features like NFC & Wifi Direct are available from long time. You can share large files over it. NFC is one of them easiest method to share a file or simply connect your device with other one. With single touch your devices are connected. It is smart feature. Before moving ahead to give you the final solution for sharing media files, I will provide you certain requirements. This is necessary to have a proper media sharing solution.

Router: You need a good router here. You can also go for a modem/router combo. Using a high speed router provide you more benefits. You can see the regular routers in the market offers you 150mbps of transfer speed. This is the most commonly found router bandwidth. I will advise you to go for a higher one. There are 300, 450, 600 and 750mpbs of router available n the market. With the increase in bandwidth the price of router also increases. Going for 450mbps will be more appropriate. This is because we are going to streaming HD videos, HD movies and audio files. They are large files and when you try to stream them on multiple devices at a single time on low bandwidth you will face buffering problem.

Home Network: A simple Home Network. Which can be achieved by connecting a Windows PC and proper LAN setup? Windows 7 would be one of the simplest options available here for configuring Media Sharing. So you can either connect your work pc or you can also convert your old pc to a media server. All you need is a large storage space and decent hardware. The system must have atleast Core 2 Duo processor with 4GB ram. We are going to use Windows Media Player only here. I am not going to list you any other media sharing application. This is the easiest one.

Devices with various Media Sharing Support: Check that the device which you are using whether it is a mobile phone, a tablet or HDTV it must have a proper media sharing support. Like DLNA, Windows File Sharing, etc type of stuff. Also ensure that these devices are capable of reading all kind of video and audio file format. If you buy a home theater system which only reads avi or mp4 then you will have to convert all your videos to avi format. Which is a time consuming process and it also spoils the video quality. Many HDTV and Home Theater system today supports a wide variety of media file format.

How to share Media in Windows 7

How to share Media in Windows 7:

Now we will move ahead with the final setup. If you had collected all stuff mentioned above, you are good to go. We will now configure the device to share file. I will go with minimum steps and simple solution only. There is no use of applying complex technology here. First thing you have to do is create a centralized storage space in your network. Where you have to keep everything. Copy all the video, audio and image files in that. And share that location. First go with below mention steps:

    1. First go in Network and Sharing Center and enable option for File sharing. Go to Control Panel > Network and internet > Network and Sharing Center > Advance Sharing Settings.
    2. Under Home or Work check the following stuff: Turn on Network Discovery & Turn on File and Printer Sharing.

    Windows 7 Advance Sharing Settings

    3. Under Public Folder Sharing check the following stuff: Turn on Public Sharing so anyone can access files.

    Windows 7 Publish Folder Sharing

    4. Under Media Streaming click on Choose Media Streaming Options. There are certain settings which you have to understand before moving ahead. The first one is to add a name for your media library. This name will be visible in your device when you will access the shared content. The second option is Show Device ON. Here you have to two choices All Network and second is Local Network. You can simply select Local Network to restrict the usage only to devices which are in the same network. That is connected to the same wifi. The next box below shows you the list of devices which are connected to your pc and accessing your content. The first one Media Program on this PC and Remote connection offers you more options to configure shared media. Just click on customize and you can see a set of parental control options also. You can modify this as per your need.

    5. Now if you want only some users to access your content then you can create a home group and restrict media sharing in it.

Windwos 7 Homegroup Media Sharing Permission

    6. Now once you are done go back and set the following settings for password protection. It is better if you turn the password stuff on. Or else many devices will have problem in accessing your files. Just apply the settings which you can see in the image below. You have to do the same kind of stuff for Public section also.

    Windwos 7 Advance Sharing Settings

    7. Once you are done with above things it is time to share the folder or partition which has ally our media files. Folders which lie inside Libraries like the one you can see below are already shared. You can move your content in respective folders. This is easy. Or you copy files in separate folder in separate partition also. But you have to manually add it in the Library.

    Windwos 7 Libraries

    8. To add a separate folder which has multimedia files just right click on that. Go down and click on Include in Library. You can create a set of different Libraries sharing different media content. Other devices on the network will be able to see your files through shared Libraries only. So you have to add all your folders in the Library first and then we will move ahead with streaming that on Android Phone.

    Add file to Libraries

    9. Once you are done with all kind of setups I had told you above you can now move ahead with sharing your media content. Will start with DLNA first. This is one of the simplest procedures to stream video and music file using Windows Media Player. Then we will move ahead with certain File Sharing applications that will allow you to access direct shared folders. This is not just limited to multimedia files but with many things. And the last thing is using a Media Sharing Applications. Android has hundreds of cool media sharing apps with simple settings.

In the same way you can also play songs from your pc directly. This is simply awesome and easy to configure. We will go with testing an Android phone with Windows 7 PC. The device which I am using Galaxy Note 2.

    File Sharing:

This is another great way of accessing your files on different platform. In Windows and Android this things is really easy. There are several tools available on Google Play through which you can access the content of phone and pc. Android has some really easy to use application for this purpose. We will test out two apps here. The first one is eShare which offers you a direct FTP Sharing. If you want to copy your files in your phone from your on wifi then his app is the best and the second one is ES File Explorer. This application allows you to access your PC shared files over the mobile phone.

    eShare:

    eShare Android App

The app is free. You can download this from Google Play. To use this application you will need to hook your mobile phone on the same wifi network. Connect your phone to the wifi and then launch the app. It will give you an ftp url. For example: ftp://192.168.1.100.6262. You will have to type this address in Windows Explorer. You can simply hit Start + E from your keyboard to open it. In the address bar type the url and hit enter. All your phone content will be visible. It does not show you the content of a memory card. Only the internal storage is visible. You can directly copy paste files in it from your pc.
