    Office Communications Server 2007: Introduction

Before anything else quickly define the term "unified communications" is the key word of this project. Unified Communications is defined as a process in which all communications devices and communication media are integrated, allowing users to reach everyone, anywhere and in real time. The goal of Unified Communications is to optimize business processes and stimulate communications by simplifying the process. To implement these we will make unified communications deployment Office Communications Server 2007 R1. Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS) 2007 is, remember, an enterprise product that integrates the means of communication in real-time detection of user presence, including web conferencing (sharing data, audio and video) , instant messaging and audio / video conversations. Microsoft invited on the market for unified communications company with a solution including instant messaging, e-mail and telephone communications, and providing a bridge between these different services. The publisher's marketing October 1 platform called Office Communications Server 2007 (OCS 2007). Its solution Office Communications Server 2007 must enable company employees to communicate via instant messaging, with a pro version of Windows Live Messenger renamed "Communicator". It also enables audio chat in VoIP, ever since Communicator or through an office phone is compatible. Finally, OCS 2007 is used to organize conferences audio or video, and share documents.

But the main advantage of Microsoft's product is its high level of integration with Exchange Server. As long as the company also has the mail server from Microsoft, synergies are possible between Outlook and instant messaging features or OCS telephony. Example Scenario: the user is late for a meeting entered on its Outlook calendar. It calls the mail from its mobile and said, all through voice recognition, it will be delayed. OCS 2007 will then send via Exchange Server, e-mails to all meeting participants to prevent them. Other functions also available via OCS 2007 as listen to its e-mails on the phone with the voice synthesis module, synchronized calendar and directory of Outlook contact or one-click a conversation, instant messaging or VoIP, when one reads one of its emails or even if its name appears in an Office document, such as Microsoft Word. All functions are accessible from PCs, telephones compatible desktop and conference facilities. The VoIP uses a proprietary protocol of Microsoft, derived from the SIP standard, but incompatible with it. We must therefore incorporate information system server mediation, if one wants to live with a real SCO platform SIP.

Re: Office Communications Server 2007: Introduction

    Architecture Overview

Office Communications Server 2007 enables the deployment of various server roles in order to increase the functionality available to customers SCO. Some of these roles are mandatory others totally optional depending on your needs. SCO exists in two versions:
    • Standard Edition: All components (except phone) are on the same server (IM, Web Conferencing, A / V Conference, deployment is simplified and requires a limited investment. During installation will be automatically deployed a database Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express. High availability is not possible. A single pool up to 5000 users only theoretically.
    • Enterprise Edition: The Enterprise Edition is designed for large scale deployments typical of large enterprises. An Enterprise pool is a collection of Enterprise Edition servers using a centralized database SQL Server. In an Enterprise Edition deployment, multiple servers Office Communications Server Enterprise Edition are deployed as a pool usually behind a program of load balancing. The servers share a pool of database Microsoft SQL Server Central, which stores user data.

Two types of configurations exist in the Enterprise Edition version:
    1. Consolidated: All server roles are installed on each server Enterprise Edition server in a pool. This configuration simplifies deployment and administration. It reduces the number of servers needed, while ensuring high availability. It is therefore particularly suited to large and medium-sized businesses that require high availability combined with minimal deployment costs. These advantages are however assured at the expense of performance and throughput per server.
    2. Extended: Allows uninstallable on its own dedicated computer following one of the roles: - the front-end server - Web server components - the Web Conferencing Server - the server audio / video conferencing. The extended configuration is better businesses for which high availability and performance and optimal throughput are essential. This configuration provides advantages in scalability and high availability, but the administration and deployment of the pool are more complex.

    The Office Communications Server roles:
    • Front: Heart of the Office Communications Server 2007 solution, it hosts mainly the roles of front-end server, web conferencing, conference A / V and web components. Roles can either be consolidated on the same server, or install on dedicated servers for the sake of performance.
    • Edge: Edge Server is deployed in the DMZ a role, it is necessary for remote access without VPN, inviting people outside the active directory domain for conferences, the establishment of a federation between two organisms (Allows a user to communicate with users of federated organizations to organize implementation). The PIC solution allows a user to communicate with users of public instant messaging networks.
    • Mediation: The role of server for interoperability with the architecture of the telephone company. (Will be a future article)
    • Archiving: Call Detail Records and Compliance.
    • Communicator Web Access: Allows Web access via a browser feature instant messaging and presence functionalities.
    • QoE: Quality of Experience Monitor (QoE) for voice and media. It facilitates the full report and a historical analysis of the good behavior of Office Communications Server 2007.

Virtualization is technically possible but not supported by Microsoft, the consolidation of roles is also not supported.

Office Communications Server 2007 supports three types of instant messaging client applications:
    • Office Communicator 2007
    • Office Communicator Web Access 2007
    • Office Communicator Mobile 2007

The federation allows users of AOL IM, Yahoo and MSN Messenger to communicate with users of Office Communications Server 2007. Using these applications, so users can access the services of Office Communications Server 2007 by using a computer, a smartphone or a pocket pc.

    Office Communicator 2007

Office Communicator 2007 is an application of unified communications that help end users be more productive by enabling them to communicate and collaborate easily, regardless of their geographic location or time zone, using various communication solutions such as instant messaging, audio and video. Integration with Microsoft Office System programs (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Groove and SharePoint Server) allows end users to connect directly from the context of their work through a wide range of communication modes.

    Office Communicator Web Access 2007

Office Communicator Web Access 2007 is a browser-based application that provides access to instant messaging features of Office Communications Server 2007 R2. With only configuration needed for an Internet connection and a Web browser, Communicator Web Access allows you to take advantage of Office Communications Server 2007 R2, even if you do not work on your personal computer with access to the same list of contacts and functions similar to instant messaging.

    Office Communicator Mobile 2007

Office Communicator Mobile 2007 is an application of enterprise messaging for mobile devices. Office Communicator Mobile provides access everywhere and provides all the features that help people meet and communicate quickly, including presence information, a unique number which your contacts can reach you and instant messaging.

    Features of Office Communicator 2007

    Conclusion

Here is a brief overview of the features off phones (probably next section) of Office Communications Server 2007.The infrastructure seems complex to view the number of roles available, the impossibility of co-located and the roles of non-support of the virtualization but these technologies will work revolutionized the way we work. Making a call by clicking on a contact displayed in Outlook, Word or any other Office application. This could soon become a habit in the office. Using the office phone in conjunction with the Outlook address book, three-, application sharing, status of the corresponding (online, call forwarding, etc..), The potential is enormous tool of the future and Microsoft makes no secret of its ambitions.

The R2 release provides new functionality for users:
    • Managing Voicemail
    • Conference bridge
    • Desktop sharing & application sharing
    • Call team and delegation
    • Response groups
    • Managed calls
    • Operator console
    • Permanent discussion groups
    • Mobility: support for new devices

OCS R2 will be 64-bit only, and will support Windows Server 2008. The R2 version will add new roles:
    • Application Sharing
    • Group Chat
