How to Share DSL connection in Windows XP

How to configure the sharing of an ADSL LAN (2 posts linking to the Internet for example) and this simply with Windows XP without special software. Here the server is running Windows XP. For the client PC you'll need at least Windows 98. Regarding the hardware needed you need a good Internet connection, a network card in each PC, and an RJ45 crossover cable or a hub and two cables rights. Note that your Internet connection should already be configured correctly if you are using wifi, the ethernet and so on.

Configuring the Connection Sharing on the PC server

    IP Setting

To begin open the Control Panel by clicking "Start" then "Control Panel":

Click on the icon "Network Connections

The two connections minimum that you must have:

I have two network cards on my server I have therefore linked one on my DSL modem and the other on my client PC with a crossover cable. The principal at the moment is to have a DSL connection active, in good operating condition regardless of the connection method you use.

Now we will configure the second network adapter that is connected to the PC client. Make a right click it and choose "Properties":

A new window appears in the list of select "Internet Protocol (TCP / IP)" then click "Properties":

A new window appears, select "Use the following IP address" and fill in the first two fields like this:

    - IP address: 192.168.0.1
    - Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Finally click "OK" then "Close" on the previous window.

    Connection Sharing

Share the DSL connection active. Make a right click it and choose "Properties"

A new window opens, click the Advanced tab:

In the "Internet Connection Sharing" check "Allow other network users to connect via the Internet from this computer". Make sure the chosen home network connection is "Local Area Connection". Finally, click on "OK":

A message appears in a new window, you can click "Yes":

    Configuring the client PC

On the client PC go to "Control Panel" then "Network Connections" as we have seen for the PC server.

Make a right click on your connection and then click "Properties":

In the list of items, select "Internet Protocol (TCP / IP)" then click "Properties":

A new window appears, select "Use the following IP address" and fill in the fields like this:

    - IP address: 192.168.0.2
    - Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    - Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Then down in the "Using the following DNS server addresses:" fill in the first field like this:

    - Preferred DNS server: 192.168.0.1
    Leave the other field blank.

Finally click "OK" then "Close" on the previous window.

This is your connection should now be shared and work on the PC server and client PC simultaneously. If this is not the case check the configuration of your browser.

Note that the procedure is basically the same on older versions of Windows XP, at least for the client. Note that we must not overlook the fact that the PC server will be operated for the benefit of Client PC internet connection, which seems logical.
