The deletion and addition of data on a hard drive in the long run cause a fragmentation of it. Fragmentation is when the files are not placed in one piece on the disc, but in several small units scattered everywhere. The reading takes more time because the disk heads have to travel more. To optimize disk access using a technique called defragmentation. Windows has a utility to defragment the hard drive. To access it, go in the workplace. Right-click on the drive to defragment, and click Properties. Click the Tools tab. You arrive in front of a screen like this:


To access the defragmentation utility, click Defragment Now. A new window appears.


The interface is simple but colorful. Before you defragment a drive, you can analyze whether it is useful or not defragment the drive. To do this, select the drive to analyze and click Analyze. Defragmenter The analysis then the disc and displays its verdict. You can view a detailed report by clicking View Report.




You can then click the Defragment button if you want to defragment the drive. Otherwise click Close. Once defragmentation is complete, you can view a report. Click the View button on the report.
