    Career in Ocean Engineering in India

    I am currently in 12th standard. After I finish with my HSC exams, I want to apply for course in Ocean Engineering. Can someone guide me about Ocean engineering and it’s scenario in India? Which institutes will be good for studying ocean engineering in India?

    Ocean engineering is a branch of engineering related to ocean and naval architecture. This course deals with topics like Hydrostatics and Stability, Marine Hydrodynamics, Ship Strength, Resistance and Propulsion, , Vibration of Floating Structures, Marine Construction and Welding, Hydrostatics and Stability, Computer Aided Marine Design and Production, Motion and Control, Design of Marine Vehicles, Marine Production and Planning, and Marine Systems. Ocean engineering includes subjects like physical oceanography, chemical oceanography, geophysics, marine biology & Marine geology.

    The course of Ocean engineering includes study of instruments used in ocean like computer to satellite linked bouys and floats, sediment traps, ocean seismometers, underwater video equipments, acoustic recorders. It also includes study of underwater vehicles like submarines and drones, remotely controlled vehicles and such other vehicles.

    To join the undergraduate program, one must have passed 10+2 patterned examination from recognized board. Marks of Mathematics, physics, chemistry and English will be given importance for admission. To apply for post graduation program, one must have scored good marks in entrance exam like GATE.

    Ocean engineers are required in both public sectors an private sector in India as well as in foreign countries. Ocean engineers have scope for making career in corporate, private and educational organizations. Some other organizations where ocean engineers are required are, Offshore Oil Recovery, Marine metals and corrosion, Remote Sensing, Underwater Vehicles, Environmental Protection, Renewable Energy, Underwater Vehicles, Global Climate Monitoring, Marine Transportation, or Naval Architecture and Defense.
