idea Mobility For Students Initiated By Delhi University

The University Grants Commission (UGC) recently proposed that Indian universities should follow the semester system. Under this, a student can spend some time in an institute, accumulate points and then study the next semester in another institute. The idea behind introducing this system is to facilitate “student mobility at both national and international level,” says Sukhadeo Thorat, chairman, UGC. However, Thorat suggests that for such a system to be in place, institutes should have a credit transfer system and an agreement on exchange of students.

Delhi University had proposed the semester system last year. In fact, the university has been taking many steps towards modernisation that are in-sync with the Western model. Be it the semester system, online resource building, introduction of industry-focussed courses or signing agreements with foreign institutions, DU is paving a path that is likely to be followed by other universities.

While explaining the university’s vision, Deepak Pental, vice-chancellor, DU, says, “The role of a university is to promote research, teaching and mentoring. We are trying to work in all these directions. The idea behind introducing the semester system is to make students more serious towards studies.” According to him, the semester pattern of learning will make students work round the year and move away from the rote learning system.

Students, too, are welcoming the move. “University education is all about critical thinking and an enquiring mind. I guess the semester system will help us in that direction,” says Anuradha Sonkar, a second year student from Hindu College.

These steps taken by Delhi university are really appreciable & important from students point of view.
I think rest of the universities from India too adapt this feature.
As a student I know the importance of the decision by Delhi University, Lets see when Mumbai University adapts this feature?
