Why you wanna replace it? as i know imageres.dll resides in system32 folder and its required for the vista to work properly, you can't simply replace it with the file from another operating system, and if you doing it for installing windows 7 visual styles in vista then there are many other good way to achive this, playing with system files is not good at all, you can make your system crash.

imageres.dll: Many icons are included in the files. It must then be extracted (with a resource editor, or recovery software icons).

Here i tip i know to making own Vista Logon Screens

    • First locate "imageres.dll" in Vista's System32 folder (C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll)
    • Copy it on your desktop.
    • Download Resource Hacker or PE Explorer.
    • Open the imageres.dll file in ResHacker or PE Explorer.
    • Go to the IMAGE folder.
    • dit the loginscreen (replace the image) for your current resolution.
    • Save and copy this file to Vista's System32 folder after backing up the original imageres.dll file.
