    K-Desktop Environment [KDE] 4.2.3 released

    What is KDE?

KDE [K Desktop Environment] is a free software project based around its flagship product, a desktop environment for Unix-like systems. The goal of the project is to provide basic desktop functions and applications for daily needs as well as tools and documentation for developers to write stand-alone applications for the system. In this regard, the KDE project serves as an umbrella project for many standalone applications and smaller projects that are based on KDE technology. These include KOffice, KDevelop, Amarok, K3b and many others. KDE software is based on the Qt toolkit. The original GPL version of this toolkit only existed for the X11 platform, but with the release of Qt 4, GPL versions are available for all platforms. This allows KDE software based on Qt 4 to also be distributed to Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. KDE or the K Desktop Environment, is a network transparent contemporary desktop environment for UNIX workstations. KDE seeks to fulfill the need for an easy to use desktop for UNIX workstations, similar to desktop environments found on Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems. The UNIX operating system is according to us the best available today. When it comes to stability, scalability and openness UNIX has no competition. In fact UNIX has been the undisputed choice of information technology professionals for many years. The lack of an easy to use contemporary desktop environment, however, has prevented UNIX from finding its way onto desktops of typical computer users in offices and homes. UNIX today dominates the server market and is the preferred computing platform for computing professionals and scientists alike. The Internet, a household name traces its heritage to UNIX. Inspite of such ubiquitous creations from the UNIX community, average computer users still expect it to be difficult to use and often stay away. This fact is particularly unfortunate since a number of implementations of UNIX, all of which are of exceptional quality and stability are freely available off the Internet.

    KDE 4.2.3 :

The KDE Community announced the immediate availability of KDE 4.2.3 on May 6th, another bugfix and maintenance update for the latest generation of the most advanced and powerful free desktop. This is a monthly update to KDE 4.2. It ships with desktop workspace and many cross-platform applications such as administration programs, network tools, educational applications, utilities, multimedia software, games, artwork, development tools and more. KDE's award-winning tools and applications are available in more than 50 languages.

Features and Details of KDE 4.2.3 :

The KDE Desktop Workspace consists of a group of core applications including Plasma, KWin, KRunner and SystemSettings. Plasma allows you to organize your workspace however you want. It has become easier to place the panels, add and move widgets around and configure your desktop. New Plasma widgets have been added, including Pastebin. You can drag and drop text and images to a Pastebin website. The link is returned to your clipboard. You can then send the link to others so that they can view the files you uploaded. Other new widgets include several system monitors, a special character selector, quicklaunch, news feeds, file previews, a calendar and even a simple webbrowser. Thousands more widgets are now available on Plasma thanks to support for Google Gadgets; Mac OS X Dashboard widgets are also available. Widgets can be written in Ruby and Python; JavaScript and C++ are already supported. You can expect that many more Plasma widgets will become available in the coming months.

    The most user-visible improvements are:

    • Online IMAP filtering in KMail has been fixed.
    • KMail's system tray icon now reacts to changes to folder properties and updates the number of emails shown there automatically
    • Bugfixes, performance improvements and optimization in KHTML - Painting and interoperability with web standards has been further improved
