Get Windows 7 Federated Search Feature In Vista

Hi.. one of my friend is having newly launched Windows 7. I saw a function in his PC called Federated Search.

This function was very very nice , useful, and time saving. I am having Vista OS at my home.

Could i get that feature in my Vista System also?

Re: Get Windows 7 Federated Search Feature In Vista

Windows 7 along with the desktop search, introduces Federated Search in which the scope of the search goes beyond your PC. You can now search for items in remote repositories from your PC. It is based on OpenSearch and the RSS format. Since it is based on open standards, it becomes very simple to create custom 'search connectors' for your own remote repositories. For example, you can search Flickr or Twitter from within explorer.

In Vista we can’t use the federated search from Windows Explorer. Instead we can use it from in-built Internet Explorer browser. You need to follow our step-by-step procedure to be able to use this federated search feature in Internet Explorer of Windows Vista:-

    1. Open your favorite site (in Internet Explorer) for which you would like to create Search Connector. Let’s consider Into Windows as our example.

    2. Next, in the search filed of the website, type TEST and search.

    3. In the resulting page, copy the URL of the page.

    4. Open Microsoft Search Connector in Internet Explorer.

    5. Paste the copied URL in the URL box and enter a name for the Search Provider field.

    6. Click Install button to finish the procedure.

    7. Open your Internet Explorer in Vista or Windows 7, and you should be able to see your favorite site name.

You can follow the above procedure for any site to make this happen. Now you can search your favorite site directly from the Internet Explorer Instant Search box.

    Try this :-

    1. Go to the site you want to create the Search Connector for.

    2. Now in DevArt, search for “TEST” (all caps)

    3. Copy the URL to the clipboard & then head over here.

    4. Paste the URL in ‘Step 3’

    5. Type DevArt in ‘Step 4’

    6. Install

    Thats it !!!

Very neat. Microsoft looks like they're going to hit a home run with Windows 7.
