To change file type icons in windows XP follow these simple steps:

• Click Start button
• Go to Control Panel
• Click on Appearance and Themes
• Then click Folder Options
• In the Folder Options dialog box, click the File Types tab
• Select the file type you wish to change
• Then click Advanced
• In the Edit File Type dialog box, click Change Icon
• In the Change Icon dialog box, click Browse
• Navigate to the new icon you want to use
• Select it and then click Open
• Click OK
• Then click Close

Changing individual desktop icons

• With your mouse, right-click on the desktop icon that you want to change.
• Click on “properties”.
• A new window will open, showing various information about the shortcut. Locate and click on the “change icon” button.
• A new window will open, showing you your choices for the new icon. Select your desired icon and click “ok”.
• You should be looking at the Properties window again. Click “ok”.
• The selected shortcut’s icon will be changed.
