I'm using windows xp now. I did have the transparent background for the text with my desktop icons and now its a blinding blue and despite the fact that I used to know how to change it the setting seems to have disappeared. Any help?

Check if your wallpaper image format is GIF or PNG.
Right Click on My Computer.
Click System
Click the Advanced tab
Click Settings in the Performance section
Check the “Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop” checkbox
Click OK until you close the windowsground. Enable USE SHADOWS FOR DESKTOP ICONS LABELS.
That should fix your problem.

You can also try MicroAngelo (v5.5 or later), which allows you to change the text color, configure custom icons, and change other aspects of Windows.
Another utility of this type is WindowFX.
