    Microsoft Security essentials failure

After using MSE for a couple of years the program itself was invaded by a virus that prevented internet log on, specifically to another security site. It will not allow installation of any other security program. During start a window appears warning of a Trojan but the window - a near duplicate of a Security essentials warning window looked suspicious so I shut down the computer.

Removing MSE has no effect. Disabling all start up programs has no effect. I tried to open the task manager to try to identify what was running but it will not open.

Any ideas? I'm a the point of scrubbing the computer and starting again - something I'm not excited about.

I think that it is a fake Microsoft Security Essentials that is installed in your pc that alerts a Trojan that attempts to trick you into thinking you are infected so that you will then install and purchase one of 5 rogue anti-virus programs that it is distributing. You can try to remove it by following the guide given here.
