dcpromo on 2003 R2 Server in Mixed Mode asking for Domain Prep Tool?

    Hi,

I just upgraded one of my company's domains from NT4 to Windows 2003
Active Directory. We're currently running in Mixed Mode, so our NT
BDC's in our field offices could still serve login requests. Well, I
built a new 2003 Server that I was going to offload all the "first
domain controller in forest tasks" to, so we could decomission the
upgraded box. I get it built and run "dcpromo", which takes me
through the Active Directory Install Wizard.

It find the domain no problem and accepts my credentials. It then
examines the current forrest, and comes back with an operation failed
    error:

    "The operation failed because:

The Active Directory Installation Wizard cannot continue because the
forest is not prepared for installing Windows Server 2003. Use the
adprep command-line tool to prepare both the forest and the domain.
For more information about using the Adprep, see Active Directory
    Help.

'The Version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest in
not compatible with the version of Active Directory on this computer.'
    "

This doesn't make much sense to me since the current DC is a Windows
2003 R2 Server box. I even used the same CD's in the builds... Is
there some particular "dcpromo" switch I have to used when promoting
in a mixed mode domain? Is it just because mixed mode is compatible
with Windows 2000 AD that it is missing the relevant information and
the prep tool needs to be run. This seemed abnormal, so I wanted to
    check here first.

R2 is a 2 disk set. There is an adprep that can be ran from the first CD to
prepare the domain for Win 2k3 and there is an AD prep that can be ran from
    the second CD.

Try running adprep from the second CD.

RE: dcpromo on 2003 R2 Server in Mixed Mode asking for Domain Prep Too

Run adprep /forestprep on the domain controller running the Schema Master
role using the Ws2K3 CD. Make sure the unplug this server from the network
before running this process, and only plug it back in if and when the forest
prep is successful, as a corrupted schema will hose your whole forest. I
learned this once the hard way...fortunately it was in a test lab.

Then, once the schema changes have replicated throughout the entire forest,
run adprep /domainprep once in each domain where you want to install a 2003
DC. Once that's all done and the changes are replicated, you can run dcpromo
    on any WS2K3 system.

Re: dcpromo on 2003 R2 Server in Mixed Mode asking for Domain Prep Tool?

Thanks. I was going to run the tool, I was just curious as to why I'd
need to seeing as the only other non-NT4 DC in this domain is a
Windows 2003 R2 Server upgraded from an NT box. You'd imagine that
Windows 2003 AD even though it was upgraded would still be compatible
with other Windows 2003 AD boxes. Is that an erroneous assumption
because it is in Mixed Mode and not Interim mode? Just seems kind of
    sloppy to me.

R2 was released later than Win 2k3. There are updated *features* in R2 that
    require a new Schema.

They are both R2 boxes though. Thought is was odd.
