Default-First-Site-Name / Servers and DNS question

When I checked my Active Directory Sites and Service and under the Sites/Default-First-Site-Name/ servers, there were 3 servers. there is 1 root DC and 2 not DCs, but when I check the DNS service on the root DC, under the zone mysite.com, then I found no record for the server, after I demote another DC to a member server recently. But we are still having a subzone, how this can be resolved? Thanks

Re: Default-First-Site-Name / Servers and DNS question

When you are in AD sites and services you have to configure the sites/subnets and have each DC moved to its belonging site/subnet. Incase you demore a DC, it is not automatically removed from AD sites and services, it needs to be deleted manually. And for DNS I think you are missing the record for the DC, so ensure the DHCP client service is started and set to automatic, which is needed for DNS registration and then run ipconfig /registerdns. You also need to ensure that DCs are not multihomed and use only the domain DNS server opn the NIC.

Could you please tell us whether all DCs/DNS in sync with each other?

Till the time it will not become a DC the sharing currently defined will continue to work, but I will recommend you to convert it over so that only domain users can access it. Any domain users that area accessing the data on this standalone machine have to maintain 2 sets of credentials, that means you may have to assit in password resets and all.

I dont think there is any issue to promote an additional DC in the existing domain. If the Operating System version is the same then no schema upgrade is needed, otherwise this has to be done first.
