IMpact of changing the IP address of a Domain Controller

HI, we are running a Windows 2003 Forest server with just 1 AD and few DCs. Due to some reason I need to change One Domain’s IP Address. Regarding this I wanted to know whether it is safe to edit the properties of the NCI and then change the IP address? And if it is not safe or I may face some problems, then please provide me some another way for doing the same.

    Thank you.

I don’t think there would be any problem if you edit the properties of the NCI and then change the IP address. You can go ahead. Just make sure to reboot the Domain and/or run ipconfig /registerdns to change the ip address in the DNS zones as well.

Also note that if it is going to be new Subnet then you will need to add it to AD sites and services and move the DC to the site that belongs to the new subnet. If it will remain the same subnet than this step is not required.

Hello Wilson. Yes you can change the IP Address from the properties but after completing the same dont for forget to do the following. From a command prompt on the dc:
    ipconfig /registerdns
    netdiag /fix

Simply change the IP address and run the following:
    • ipconfig /flushdns
    • ipconfig /registerdns

Once done, restart the netlogon service again and run netdiag /fix or reboot the system. Now check in the DNS zones that the new ip addresses are listed correct.
