Sound Card not detected after XP re-install

Following a re install of Windows XP (Home edition) the sound card has not
been detected. I have installed the drivers from the manufacturers website,
but the sound card is still not showing up in Device Manager or when running
Belarc Advisor.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

If it's a sound card, remove the drivers.
Shut down the PC an remove the card.
Power up and verify that Windows does not see any sound card.
Power down and reinstall the sound card.
Power up and when Windows identifies the new card, specify where the
driver file you downloaded is on your hard disk and then let Windows
install the new drivers from that location on the hard drive..

It's an integrated stereo sound card.

Sometimes, the sound must be activated in bios setup. Verify that
the on-board sound has been enabled.

Or the possibility that the sound card chip on the motherboard is
now broken.

I can't see any mention of sound in the BIOS

There is that possibility but the PC hasn't moved. One day it worked fine, 2
days later with XP re-installed it doesn't work. Would be a bit of a
coincidence?

This is normal, i.e. no coincidence. Any subassembly
on the motherboard can fail, and sound-on-board circuits
fail more often than others (one among 7 PCs in my case)
usually without warning.

This seems an anomaly. What brand of BIOS has your MB?
The AMI BIOS Setup Utility lists at
/ Advanced / On Board Devices
On board AC '97 Audio
On board LAN
and so on.
Better have another look. If your MB SoB has failed you
need to disable it in BIOS in order to activate a PCI audio card.

I think I found it- Azalia? Disabled then enabled it (with a re-boot in
between) but no difference. So if the integrated soundcard has packed in I
can still open up the box and add one?

If there is integrated sound on the mother board then there will be an
option in the BIOS to turn it on or off. Turning it off allows the user to
add their own sound card..
