Safely Remove Hardware icon doesn't appear

When I use a USB thumb drive in one machine, a laptop, running WinXP I don't
get the icon to Safely Remove Hardware. It doesn't matter which thumb drive
I use, and I get the message for these thumb drives on other machines. I am
not hiding inactive icons. The thumb drive contents show up in explorer.

How can I get this to reappear, or is there another method I can use to stop
the process? It's using USB 1.0 on the laptop.

Thanks

Mich

Your thumb drive is set up for 'Optimise for fast removal'. Consequently,
it doesn't appear in Safely Remove Hardware because it doesn't require
stopping. I would not advise you the change this arrangement. It is
obviously set up for 'Optimise for speed' on the other machines, hence the
drive has to be stopped to force a cache flush.
