Mouse scroll wheel doesn't

Windows XP Professional SP2.

The mouse has an irritating problem. Whereas all the mouse buttons work,
the scroll wheel won't do anything untill I go into control panel, change
the scroll behaviour, change it back and click OK. It now works, but if the
machine is turned off, or put in standby or hibernated, the scroll wheel
stops working again until the above is repeated.

Any ideas? Anyone?

Have you tried reinstalling the driver? Or just uninstall the mouse entirely
and reinstall it.

That seems to have fixed it. The entry existed but was set to 0, even
though I kept setting the scroll lines to 3 in the control panel.

Actually, I thought it had fixed it. Well it had, but only in part.

Although most screens now scroll correctly, Internet Explorer does not. And
it won't until the mouse scroll setting in control panel is reset.

I also found that the registry entry that you provided is automatically
reset to '0' when the machine reboots or comes out of standby or hibernate.

Happens in the only other account on the machine (Administrator) as well.

Then perhaps the driver is reseting it in the registry? Since you say it
resets coming out of standby or hibernation, I would expect that Windows
isn't doing the "resetting", so is there another driver you can use that
does make the mouse wheel work, and try that? Even if the extra buttons
aren't recognized it would eliminate the driver changing the wheel setting.

I don't think I can use another mouse driver since this is a wireless mouse
and requires its own driver to support the wireless bit and to support the
extra buttons not found on your common or garden mouse.

STOP PRESS: I tried another non wireless mouse and a different driver - same
thing. I think I'm going to bounce this in the suppliers direction, the
machine is still under warranty.
