The Bios screen will appear even if the hard drive has failed. But when you go further after the bios screen, an error message will be displayed and you wont be able to get further. If the hard drive has failed, the common symptom you get is either from the bios it will tell that SMART failed (if it is activated), or you will starting to get a clicking sound from the hard drive.
