How to test USB speed / performance

Is there anyone who can tell me how to test the speed of my usb ports withough buying hardware? I mean to say is there any software out there that can do the same, and this software should be free as well. Thanks for any help.

Re: How to test USB speed / performance

Could you please specify what you are trying to do anyways, because the usb might be likely either 1.1 or 2.0. Incase you have enhanced in the Device Manager then it will be usb 2.0.

You can use something like USB 2.0 Loopback plugs that are one of the fastest methods to diagnose, troubleshoot and load test your PC's USB functions. When used with compatible PassMark testing software (see below) is it possible to:
  1. Quickly check if a USB port is powered;
  2. Check that data can be sent and received from the port;
  3. Check USB errors rates and transmission speed (up to 480Mbits/sec) in Windows;
Just go to the passmark website to get it.
