External USB Hard Disk & Windows XP Installation

The external usb hard drive was pluggedi n when I formatted Windows XP on my computer. After when the installation was finished then the external hard drive became inacessible. If I click on the drive then I am getting "drive is not formatted, do you want to format it now?" message and the file system is Raw instead of NTFS. So how do I access and also restore the files on the drive? Thanks for any help.

Even I was facing a similar problem after doing a Windows XP repair. I also have agreed to reformat the 200gb hard drive to NTFS. Then it was overwritten with a 100mg Fat partition and the rest was unformatted. Then I used a program called Partition Magic to delete the new partition and then searched for any previous partitions and then restored them successfully.
