Re-detect a USB device without Unplugging and Replugging

I had updated windows xp recently with all patches and update needed. I am using a external hard drive through usb port. The drive keeps on connected to the system. It is fixed on the backside. I am looking for some way by which I can plug and unplug without removing the cable. Is there a way to do that. Like mounting and unmounting it without turning off the drive.

I do not think there is any way for that. You need some kind of power on and power button for the usb drive. If that is available then you can turn on and off the same. Also there is no application available on the web that can do that. You will need to manually remove and plug it. It works only like that way.

You can do that by uninstalling the usb hadware and then installing it back again. Go in Device Manager. In that you can find the drive attached. Simply right click on that and choose uninstall. To install the same back again you can click on find new hardware. this is a bit long procedure but XP offers you this way of plugging and unplugging the drive without ejecting it.
