| DVD Writer won't read DVD's
I recently upgraded my motherboard to an Intel D925XBC. Hard drives and DVD writer are on IDE channel, HD as master and DVD as slave. Running XP Pro SP2 with all updates and patches installed from windows update. 512M DDR2 533MHZ, 3.06 P4 socket 775 processor, ATI X300 Video, sound and LAN onboard. Now the problem. Upgraded motherboard, preformed repair on XP. LG DVD writer would not read DVD's. Reads and burns CD's perfectly. Explorer showed drive as DVD-Ram correctly, but would not read DVD's. Purchased Movies or durned disks. Preformed Clean install of XP Pro, no help problem persisted. Oh @#$@ I thought, the drive went bad. Replaced LG drive with Samsung DVD writer. Same symptoms. Uninstalled drive and rebooted, no help. Tried registry fix suggested in some of the posts here, no help. Was this drive bad too? RMA'd it and got a replacement, same symptoms. Took LG drive and installed in son's Dell Optiplex desktop, works perfectly. Put Samsung drive in dell machine, works perfectly. Tried both drives back in Intel machine and problem is still there. Intel says it's a software problem. Oh yea, also upgraded firmware on both LG and Samsung drives. By looking around the forums here I see I am not the only one having this kind of problem. Has anyone actually found a fix for this? Can anyone offer anymore suggestions? |

What DVD burning software are you running on the Intel system? Did you remove it properly, then reinstall after a subsequent reboot? Nero does a lousy uninstall. I would recommend using their cleaner (you can download it from their site). Otherwise, numerous files and registry entries stay in place after you "un-install" it and can cause problems on reinstallation. running XP. drive used to work - now can only write DVD's, but can't read anything. Drive shows up on system, but can't see file content in explore. Will keep working it, let you know if I stumble on anything |

Running Nero 6.6 on both machines. Nero was also uninstallrd using the control panel, and then reinstalled after rebooting . When I Removed the drivers for the DVD drive I shut the machine off, disconnected the drive, rebooted making sure the drive was no longer showing up in th eBios or XP. Then turned off, reconnected drive, booted up. Xp saw new hardware and installed driver. Went to Aheads website ang got the cleaner. Used it. Turned machine off totally. even without Nero install still won't read a DVD. Even without Nero installed. Put any DVD in and windows explorer changes from DVD-Ram drive to CD drive. Reinstalled Nero. Stills sees any DVD as Blank Media. |

-- I too have a lite-on dvd writer reader player that doesn't recognize media when the disc is inserted. the os xpsp2 states that all is well and it use to work but I needed space and added an 80 g harddrive. That's when everything changed. I will keep at it myself and hopefully work it out and let u guys know what it is. When you added the 80gb harddrive, did you check that the jumpers on the back of both the new hard drive AND the optical drive were set correctly? You cannot have two masters or two slaves on the same IDE cable. One of each (doesn't matter which is which) I did. Both master/slave setups . That is the harddrives 40 master & 80g slave. Along with the cd master/dvd slave. I tried them in various configurations. I got a suggestion that the dvd might be defective. I tend to think it is. Also, I recently received a diagnostic message that there is no parameter for the F:/ dvd drive. Does that mean that there is no path ?? |

| Same problem with Samsung DVD - software related?
I have been fighting with this same problem... The following to date: 1. Drive works fine if installed in two other PCs 2. Another Samsung DVD drive does the same if installed in affected PC The above lead me to the conclusion that there is something software related not hardware. 3. In Windows Explorer the drive is listed as 'DVD-RAM Drive' until I insert a DVD video disc - then changes to 'CD Drive' 4. Click on drive get message: 'D:\ is not accessable. Incorrect function.' 5. Checking this message on Microsoft knowledgebase gets the following articles: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324129/en-us This refers to 2 articles wrt the Incorrect Function error. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529/ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315350/ The latter seems a better match, but it seems very specific to Roxio Easy CD Creator, however I am using Nero 6. The problem is supposed to be fixed in XP SP2 - but maybe not? Windows seems to see the DVD video disc as a CD and then sees it as empty. Not sure that this gets us anywhere, but I will keep on digging. |

I've been away form the computer for several days now so please excuse the delay. I'm still in the same situation and will be plugging away at it. It's become more of a question of longevity now. I could waste less $ and energy by going out to buy another and installing it, but I'd rather fix the one I got if I can. If I run into anything I'll get back to u. I updated the firmware on my writer and now I am able to use DVDs that I have burnt. It still thinks that any commercial DVDs are either empty or the 'Function' error appears: when it appears as CD Drive in explorer, I get the 'Function error', otherwise it is listed as DVD-RAM Drive and then it says there is no disc in the drive! Not sure where to from here though. I tried the firmware route from the manufactrurer and it had no effect that I can see. The company was Lite-On Coorperation. Thx for the post though. I think mine is the registry. have bought a sony dvd rw AG170A WHICH HAS THE SAME PROBLEM...IT CAN WRITE but not read DVD's ..but at the same time it can read CD's.... |

| Re: DVD Writer won't read DVD's
I agree with Zax, I think it is a software problem. My Samsung SE-S084 behaves exactly the same, it will read/write CDs just fine, it will read DVDs which I have burnt, but won't read the original DVD from which it was copied. That suggests it might be a copy-protection or region code issue(?) I have tried many examples of the above, dozens of original DVDs behave like there is no disk in the drive after the drive goes "ready". The exact same title, backup copy works just fine. I can copy and burn a backup but not an original. And this just started happening a few weeks ago. Since this is a very old thread, wonder if anyone has fixed the problem? thanks. |
