RE: Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and Press Enter

A new mb requires a new xp installation, you need to boot to xp cd,delete
the partition, create one, then let xp format & do a new install.

What motherboard (manufacturer and model number) are you using?
What hard disks (manufacturer and model number) are connected to the
motherboard and to which interfaces on the motherboard?

Motherboard: MSI P965 NEO
Hard Disk: Seagate 300GB SATA2
Interface from hard disk to motherboard is using sata2 cable

Re: Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and Press Enter

You read the mobo manual re how to set up the sata/raid hd, even if you're
not using raid config
Used the F6 option to install raid drivers from floppy during winxp
installation?

Re: Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and Press Enter

Not neccessarily, it very much depends on the mobo/sata controler
combination.
Read mobo instructions for the specifics. This mobo has two controllers
there are differing installation instructions for each, depends which your
sata drive is connected to.

Is there a floppy in the drive (say, a driver you used during
installation) with a higher boot priority than the HD? (Check the
boot priorities in the BIOS.)

SATA is not autodetect in Windows--it came after Windows so there's no
way Windows would know about it. Some motherboards work anyway
because they allow the SATA drive to be accessed as if it were PATA.

Pierre:
You are correct. The SATA controller is integrated in the Intel chipset on
that motherboard. There should be no need to for the user to manually
install another SATA controller driver in a non-RAID configuration such as
yours.

Your problem lies elsewhere. It probably is due to the fact that your SATA
HDD has been incorrectly connected. Strangely enough, I believe your SATA
HDD must be connected to the SATA4 connector, and *not* the SATA1 connector.
Closely review your motherboard's user manual and check this out.

Also check out whether there's a need to set a BIOS element in a particular
way for a non-RAID configuration, such as yours. The defaults should be OK,
but maybe something has changed in the interim.

I don't think the boot priority order will be a factor here, but check it
out in the BIOS to ensure the system detects the SATA HDD and is properly
reflected in the boot priority order.

I'm assuming that the installation of the XP operating system went without
any problems. You may have to make a fresh install anyway. But first check
out the above.
Anna

Yes, we understand that. But did you try connecting your SATA HDD to the
SATA4 connector as I suggested?
