Error: \device\harddisk1\D during a paging operation

After connecting USB external hard drive to my system running windows xp i get an error message saying "An error was detected on \device\harddisk1\D during a paging operation". I have tried connecting the same external hard drive to other system and i cam getting the same error message there as well. It seems as if there is something wrong with the drive but i don"t know what, is there anyone who can help??? Any help regarding this issue will be highly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I think disk caching on your drive might have got enabled or you might have disconnected it without using Safely Remove Hardware system tray or you might have kept connected to it to your at shutdown. In order to fix it you will can try running "chkdsk d: /r" command in command prompt for repairing the file structure and presuming the changes that might have taken for the drive.
