USB Mass Storage Device - This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I just purchase an Iomega ext HD 160GB USB 2.0 . Apparently my Getaway PC XP
Pro SP-2 doesn't detect the new hardware. I tried installing the BIOS update -
as recommended - but still doesn't work. When i tried to add the hardware the
system finds it but at the end there is a msg that it could be added properly.
In devide manager it shows the yellow icon with exclamation sign. No letter
has been assigned and no way it shows in disk management.
Driver points to usbstor.sys . Gateway, PC is not much help, Iomega website
doesn't do much either and same scenario with Microsoft website.
I noticed, by searching the web, this problem is been around for a while. Any
idea how to correct a problem?
Thanks

Thanks Jaymon,
I tried that. I did up to step 6 : "If the driver file points to the USBSTOR.
SYS file, the correct driver file is being used. Please proceed to STEP
THIRTEEN" and jumped to step13 "STEP THIRTEEN - Check to see if your Bios
will support your Hard Disk Drive Some computer's BIOS will not work
correctly with large disk drives. Check with your computer manufacturer to
see if you need a BIOS upgrade to support your Hard Disk Drive." and I did
that too I got the newer version of BIOS and downloaded and ran it but
apparently did not correct the problem.

Hi Jaymon,
I am going to try that tool. I have a Gateway with XP pro SP 2 and Pentium 4
CPU 2.53GHz.
The USB is an Intel 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller.

No sure what i should be looking at with that tool. Any specific information
i should be looking for? In the mobo chipset i see North Bridge and South
Bridge. The mobo chipset model is i850E by Intel.

Depending on your Gateway Mobo's chipset..? A general search revealed the
following..
http://support.gateway.com/support/d...=USB+2.0&st=kw
See an explanation of error codes here..

Open Everest and click the report button, next, system summery only, next,
plain text, finish and you will see your report.. Scroll down to Motherboard
section and with the mouse, right click hold & select all, right click copy
and paste to your reply post, do the same for Peripherals section, add it to
your reply post..Your call..
Hope this can help..

RE: USB Mass Storage Device - This device cannot start. (Code 10)

In looking at your lengthy report, I see you need to free up space on your C:
drive ASAP, 3% free is bad news.. Also, have you tried reinstalling
USBSTOR.SYS..? Search for usbstor.inf, advanced search in Windows Explorer,
it will be in the c:\windows\inf folder/dir and right click, install and
reboot, see if that can solve anything.. If not, free up at least 5-10GB or
more of space on your C: drive, see if that makes a difference, the more free
space the better..
Look through these web pages for your main board and investigate the
possibilities of updating your system.. Compare with the offered update on
the Gateway site (link I previously provided)..Using Everest ID your BIOS
AA#s, at your discretion..

http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/mv2/mv2_bios.htm
http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/mv2/mv2_drive.htm

At least Gateway used a decent mobo and not some generic unknown brand name
as the folks at HP and Compaq do, to name a few..
I hope this can help, best of luck..

I was using a external hard drive via my USB and it was working fine and then
it just stopped. Now I get a message in "USB Mass Storage Device" that the
device cannot start. The driver is USBSTOR.SYS. What can I do? I've tried
uninstalling and re-installing, updating and rolling back. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the input but I've done all those things. That's why I'm here.

Check your BIOS -- there is on option on many BIOS that says "USB keyboard/storage device" -- make sure that is enabled
