toshiba satellite A30 overheating

Hi,
My laptop seems to get very very hot in the back corner where the power
plugs in and after about 20 minutes the laptop just switches it's self off.
I am thinking that it is overheating. Underneath the laptop there are 2 fans
that are working all the time and as far as I can see that is all that is
cooling. I have it sat on a wooden desk in a cool room so nothing is getting
in the way.

Is there anything I can do to cure the overheating problem?

The fans may be rotating, but are you certain that the airways that cool the
processors are clear? These get bunged up with fluff and grime over time
(and not a lot of time). The best way to clear it, in my opinion, is to
apply the crevice nozzle of a vacuum cleaner to the grills through which the
air enters (usually underneath on a laptop). This pulls the dirt out the
way it went in. Severe cases may require some dismantling and cleaning -
not a job for the faint hearted.

Some will suggest blowing air into the airways to shift the dirt, but in my
experience, this can often blow it to where it is not wanted.

As M.I. 5.75 replied, it is more than likely a dust build-up problem. Here
are a few links that might get you started if you feel like doing it
yourself. If you are mechanically inclined at all and have a good amount of
patience, it can be done.

Get a good set of jeweler's screwdrivers- you'll be glad you did. Don't use
a Phillip's screwdriver that is worn at all- it doesn't take much to screw
up those small screws.

Good luck, and take your time.

Although this may not help in this case, some folks have taken to
elevating their laptops so as to reduce the resistance to air flow as
much as possible. You may wish to keep an eye on the S.M.A.R.T. error
rates for your HDD too.

Best wishes to you,

Pete

Contact Toshiba tech support and arrange to get the laptop's defective
power supply replaced.
