WMIxWDM 106 "Machine Check Event reported is a corrected error"

Hi, I’m running a dual Opteron Windows 2003 system with the following configuration: yan S2895, 2x AMD Opteron 246, 4x 512MB RAM (2 per CPU). The problem am facing with this system is since it starts, I get the following error message in every 12 to 15 minutes:

"Machine Check Event reported is a corrected error"

I’ve tried many things that dint work but before I get to that I would like to know how does the information in the Data map to the MCE/MCA registers. Can I get any kind of software or program that can decode this Data in human readable text?

Addition: WMIxWDM 106 "Machine Check Event reported is a corrected error"

I did some searches where I came to know that this occurs with both 32bit and 64bit Win2003 SP1. By the way can post the complete Event log?

Re: WMIxWDM 106 "Machine Check Event reported is a corrected error"

I had the same problem. I set up the same hardware running Opteron Troy E stepping cores and 2 gig of RAM (2x1gig sticks) and ran fine for 3 years running Server 2003 64-bit Edition.

We needed to add more RAM, so I got another 6 gig and loaded them on for a total of 4 gig per CPU. The result, I got WMIxWDM Event 106 warnings in Windows and the occassional bit of data corruption and occasional blue-screen reboot.

After testing, I thought for sure it was one of the CPUs. With 2x1gig chips, each CPU was only addressing 1 stick, thus, addressing in 64bit single channel mode. Adding 3 more sticks enabled it to address the RAM in dual channel mode at 128 bit. Since AMD CPUs have integral RAM controllers and everything Microsoft says "It's a problem with the CPU", I believed it. I saw 0100: in the Event report showed the actual CPU number that reported the error. In my case it was always "01". The thing that convinced me it was the CPU was when I swapped the CPUs and all the errors then came from "00".

So, it was the absolute tail-end of the CPU's warranty with AMD, after talking with a tech who was as clueless to the mysterious "Event ID: 106" as I was and was hunting forums with Google as well, he set me up to RMA it, which I did.

The new CPU came in and when I put it in, same problem; this time, reporting it was from the CPU I left in the machine. Now I figure EVERYBODY is WRONG (AMD, Microsoft and Tyan) and the problem HAS to be RAM related. I spend an evening working late in the office adjusting timings to the RAM when I hit upon the magic setting.

The solution: I dropped the clock of my RAM from "Auto" (166Mhz) to "Manual 133Mhz". Everything became stable. I slowly put everything back the way it was and left the RAM under-clocked.

My theory. Event 106 is an ECC RAM error it recovered from. The problem though is in the RAM errors it doesn't recover from (blue-screen) or the RAM errors it fails to catch. It took me two weeks to nail this one down after finding limited to no information online.

Sorry to grave-dig an old post, but maybe if I posted my solution, it'll save someone else somewhere the headache. :)

Re: WMIxWDM 106 "Machine Check Event reported is a corrected error"

Thanks a lot, I had this problem and I have solved it by turning off the ECC in BIOS. Sure, it's not the solution, but the 106 error stopped.
I don't know whether it is a CPU problems, or the malfunction of RAM controller. But the event id 106 indicated, that memory controller have corrected the error in RAM.

    Sorry for my english.
