This Device Cannot Start (code 10)

Hi all!

I'll save the long tale of woe and just say that my hard drive failed. Went down in a glorious display of BSOD. So now I have a spiffy new one...with nothing on it.

I loaded my XP Home Edition and upgraded to the Service Pack 3 like a good girl...

The New Hardware Wizard found "IDT High Definition Audio Codec" and automatically started to do the installation. At the last second, it gives me an error of "Problem Installing Hardware: This Device Cannot Start (code 10)"

I've tried the troubleshooting suggestions of uninstalling and reinstalling (via New Hardware Wizard), I've tried going to the IDT website and getting updated drivers, but the drivers won't install, because the hardware isn't installed.

Please help? Pictures are pretty, but I would love to hear what is being said...

A hardware brand that makes up the MB would help. However,if intel, amd, etc,
go to thier web site, install the chipset installation utility for youre
boards chip-
set,get the audio files as well.

Re: This Device Cannot Start (code 10)

You need to install the drivers for your integrated audio or sound card. You
can get updated drivers from the PC, motherboard or sound device manufacturers
support site.
If you don't have a disk with the drivers on it, check the PC manufacturers
support site for drivers specific to your exact make/model PC. Download and
install the drivers per their instructions.
If you fail to find drivers there and the audio is integrated, check the
motherboards support site for drivers specific to your exact make/model
motherboard and chipset.
Or if you have an sound card installed, check the sound cards support site for
drivers specific to your exact make/model sound card.

If you are not sure if the audio is integrated or not, or the manufacturer of
the motherboard, sound card etc., download the stand alone version of SIW from

Download it to a folder on your PC.
Once downloaded go to the folder where you saved SIW and double click on the
siw.exe file.
In SIW under "Hardware" click on "Motherboard".
Right click in the "Right" pane and click "Select all" in the popup menu.
Press ctrl+c on the keyboard to copy.
Paste the contents in a reply to this thread by clicking once in your email
reply window and the press ctrl+v to paste the contents.
Send the reply for others to view and assist you in getting the correct drivers.

Re: This Device Cannot Start (code 10)

Well, tracing down the motherboard part number of 0FJ030, suggests the
computer might be a Dell Dimension 9150. The driver listed for it
is Stac 92XX (Sigmatel). As far as I can determine, Sigmatel was
acquired by Freescale ? I don't see how IDT figures into the picture.
I might try this driver. One driver covers more than one Sigmatel
CODEC.

SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio, v.6.10.0.5343, A02
Sigmatel STAC92XX C-Major HD Audio Driver
R147075.EXE Hard-Drive 7 MB

http://support.us.dell.com/support/d...&fileid=195629

And if a separate sound card (a PCI add-in card) is being used,
there would be a separate driver for that. But I don't see
any evidence of a separate sound card in the Belarc information
above.

Checking Dell's site using the service tag number shows it could be a
Dimension 9150 or an XPS 400 and the audio driver recommended out of three
listed (one being sigmatel), is a creative driver. The best thing for the OP to
do is go to Dell's site and run their System Information tool to find out what's
in the system.

If your still not sure what you have/need, go to Dell's site and run their
System Information tool to find out what's in the system.

Sorry, hit send to quick.

I ran the system info tool, and this is what it gave me.

System Summary

Is it reading off of MY computer, or the normal specs? Will this change because a different Hard Drive and OS are on the comp? It originally came with XP: Media Center Edition, but no restore disks were shipped with.

Re: This Device Cannot Start (code 10)

So it's a Dell E1505 ?

And you installed the sound driver ?

************
( E1505 )

http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?...1505&rpp=1 2&
p=4&subcat=dyd&rf=all&nk=f&ira=False&~srd=False&ip sys=False&advsrch=False

( SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio, v.5.10.0.4995, A06 )

ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R122161.EXE (7.6MB)
************

Depending on the WinXP Service Pack, you may also need the HDaudio driver
from Microsoft. SP3 has the HDaudio driver included. SP1 and SP2 are
missing the driver, and there is a download page for it. But that hotfix
is also packaged with many of the audio drivers.

In the above R122161 download, is a folder "HDAQFE", which stands for
High Definition Audio. kb835221 is in there, which provides the HDaudio driver.
(Some of the RealTek driver downloads, provide KB888111, so perhaps that
Sigmatel driver is a bit older.)

If the HDaudio driver was installed, you could go to Device Manager,
look in System Devices and find

"Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio"

Doing a "Properties" on that one, and looking at the driver files
list, should show "hdaudbus.sys".

Now, that being said, sometimes the problem with the driver install,
is the presence of that UAA bus driver. There is a particular sequence
used, to uninstall it, and then try the installer package from your
laptop maker (Dell) again. This is a copy of the recommended procedure.

*******

1)Go in safe mode [ Press F8 when the computer is booting ]

1a) [ Use the Device Manager for the following steps... ]

2)Disable the HD audio device under Sound Video Games
controllers, do not uninstall it here! [This is the one with
the Code 10 right now)

3)Disable under the system devices "Microsoft UAA bus driver for high
definition audio", do not uninstall it here!

4)Now uninstall the "Microsoft UAA bus driver for high definition audio"
(via this device manager in safe mode), the HD audio device will then
also be uninstalled automatically.

5)Install the latest driver for your motherboard.

*******

Now, in that description, it is important how that latest
driver is installed. If you start up and the computer
rediscovers the hardware before you've had a chance to
install the driver, it could reinstall what was previously
there. But the above Safe Mode procedure, is intended to
remove the old stuff, so the driver can install without
any UAA already in place.

Someone tried this procedure, and this is their post back.

Re: This Device Cannot Start (code 10)

I had the same problem. I uninstalled the IDT driver (Have no idea when that driver showed up it didn't come with the laptop) Then went to Dell and downloaded their driver package from Sigmatel which was recommended for my dell latitude D620

http://support.dell.com/support/down... atid=&impid=

I am running XP and this worked. Took many hours!
