Automatic Updates - Error Message 1058

I'm trying to get our PC back up and running again after a virus but can't
get automatic updates to work, I keep getting the following error message
when I go into services.msc and try to 'start' it after setting it to
'automatic':

could not start the automatic updates service on local computer error 1058

I'm assuming that this is why I can't install SP2 as well as during setup
it: cannot copy the file explorer.exe

Any ideas would be most welcome, anything has got to be better than a full
re-install which was going to be my next step. Many thanks

you can manually
download the sp2 file
from microsoft.

then you can boot
into safemode and
launch that sp2
file to initiate
the installation.
