MSIEXEC.EXE (installer) problem

Windows XP desktop has never given me any problem in past 6 months since I assembled this PC. Three days ago I ran Windows Update for the first time and since then it started behaving weird. I started getting several problems such as Outlook 2003started freezing, IE7 hangs, have received few BSODs as well, there is trouble installing software, error messages with references to audio
drivers not working even though the sound is fine, etc. Some of the error messages have also referenced MISEXEC.EXE, e.g., after an attent to run 'Detect & Repair' in Office 2003.

These all problems started all of a sudden after installing windows updates. Can anybody here please tell me how can I fix it back again? Many thanks.

For the last few days my computer has been running various program installers (msiexec). I was just wondering if anyone knows how I can get rid of this as it is very frustrating having it pop up ever few minutes. Thanks
