"My Computer" hangs for 1-2 minutes

Hi, I am having a Dell laptop running with Windows XP Sp3. It is just about 6 months old device and was working fine until two days. Since then whenever I open My Computer, my system gets freezed for about 2 minutes and then it displays the drives. Problem is only while opening my computer. As per troubleshooting I already tried disconnecting all Mapped Network drives, even I disconnected the CD drive but the problem remains there itself.

I have no idea what could be causing this problem. Hope someone from here can help me out. Thanks.

Are you connected to any network? If yes, there could be chances that when you launch My computer system may be trying to connect the network and hence it takes time. Just to make sure this is not the cause i will suggest you to unplug the network cable and try to open My computer. See if still it freezes.

Furthermore, this could also be sign of faulty disk. Try running a disk check (R-Click on disk -> Properties -> Tools -> Check Now) Select all options. The disk check will occur on the next reboot.

I had a similar problem on one of my Windows servers and resolved it by removing a CD that was left in the CD-ROM drive. The disk was in there so long that it became covered with dust and was unreadable. The Disk Management section in Computer Management was even affected.

Type "Net use" in dos. Do you have some networking sessions that are not functioning?
Example: You have mapped the U: \ \ MySleepyComputer \ c $,
and this computer is off.
To remove the network session. "Net use U: / d"
This solved my problem.

I solved the same problem on my computer by unplugging the HP Scanner.
