LoadPerf error in Event Viewer

Booted up my PC today...had nothing on my screen, black. Rebooted and
everything was fine.

Looked in Event Viewer. Under applications heading saw half dozen
messages or so which make reference to LoadPerf errors.

Some of the messages were today and some yesterday. The error messages
make reference to "performance counter value name string value is
incorrectly formatted. The bogus string is 4974..."

Another one of the messages said "Unloading the performance counter
strings for service WmiApRPL failed.

I connected to M/Soft help center and did what the instructions said.
Went to the command prompt and type lodctr/r which didn't do anything. I
guess it's supposed to rebuild string errors in the registry. From the
indications that appeared after typing the command there were other
things I had to do, but I did not understand what they were.

I didn't see any errors other then on the 9th & 10th, so I did a system
restore to the 8th and so far I have not seen the issue reappear.

I was playing a computer game on the 9th when I got kicked out to the
desktop and the error is both before and after my game crashed.

I probably didn't do the right thing by doing the system restore, but I
didn't know what else to do.

I was not able to determine what causes LoadPerf problems and have never
seen this error before. Can someone give me a hand in understanding what
causes this problem and how to fix in terms I can understand?

WinXP SP2 with all updates, Intel Core C2D, 2 GB Ram, AVAST, Comodo,
Nvidia 8600GT OC, Super-AntiSpy, Ad-Aware, Spybot S & D. TIA.

D.
