    Files lost after automatic checkdisk

Checkdisk started automatically yesterday on startup and has not only wiped all files, but prevents saving new files, putting them in a temporary file 'C:\Documents and Settings\TEMP.YOUR-55E5F9E3D2\My Documents\My Pictures'

I have an older Compaq, about 2006 or so, so I expect it's on its last legs anyhow, but I'd like to at least be able to save a few new files before we get a new system.
