ntbackup.exe has a few bugs. You will need a better backup app. Even the 'Files and Settings Transfer Wizard' (start menu) is better. -- Was this helpful? Then click the "Yes" button below. +++++++++++ kind of what I figured :: I have -twice - asked good ol' MS help desk - LOL LOL quite the joke... dont know why I even bother asking them anything LOL they 1: dont seem to read the whole question - which could mean they have an autoanswer that checks for keywords in the questns. and spews out some rediculously dumb answer 2: dont have a clue LOL thanks for your answer tho. I have tested one backup pgm that 'seems' to work - havent done a re-install from it yet to see if its done a complete job. I bakup the C: partition now and then so when Win goes bonkers I just reload the last backup. except - my older pc just went south and I would get the 'blue screen' with all its bs. trouble is - it did a restart about ..25 of a second after pop up so I couldnt tell what the prob was. had to do a new install with format. thats after trying to do 'R' repair - another joke of MS. and then a new install 'overwrite' which didnt work either. LOL LOL pc's are just too much fun LOL LOL LOL they are like females - cant live with or without them LOL ted :-) +++++++++++ "Mark L. Ferguson" wrote: > ntbackup.exe has a few bugs. So are you saying that the Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS) never changes from Manual to Start mode? VSS is configured, by default, for manual mode. That means it is not started (and running) unless a client process asks it to start. It would only start if an application used VSS. About anywhere up to 18 minutes after the applications closes will VSS change from Started to Manual. You didn't happen to configure VSS to be Disabled, did you? Did you include any system-state files in the backup? Have you check Event Viewer to see if there were errors during the backup? Are you running a Terminal Server client on your host (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888603/en-us)? Is the "Disable volume shadow copy" option UNCHECKED (not selected) in the advanced dialog for the backup job? Are we to guess if you are using the Home or Professional version of Windows XP? If Home, did you install the Backup program (ntbackup.exe is not included, by default, when installing WinXP Home)? Or are you asking about some other "Win Backup" program than ntbackup.exe? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/104169/en-us |

| Re: Win Backup - shadow copy +++++++++= sorry - not enuf info - I prob shouldnt write a ? when I am irritated LOL xp pro sp2 and all msupdates -except ie7 I tried resetting it to auto - still didnt work (vss) I always include system state. yes - red the 'report' said 'error trying to load vss' there were about 15 +/- files that didnt get backdup due to being used by another process. I didnt realy worry about them because they were mostly .log files and nothing seemd a prob looseing. I run nothing in the background during backup. pre-clean temp int files, cookies etc no server - all simple . I run a clean system. dont allow anything in startup that doesnt have to be there. HP, Word, and others that all want to have instant stuff always running - removed ! dont use any of it enuf to warrant the cpu nano's lost LOL think I covered all ur ?'s. ted :-) +++++++++++++++ "VanguardLH" wrote: > "ted" wrote in message > news:69AE1E00-252A-4883-8113-EBFB12F78BA4@microsoft.com... > > I have asked this b4 but never got a straight answer > > why does shadow copy not load to do its job ?? > > even after a another full win xp install ! ! > > > So are you saying that the Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS) never > changes from Manual to Start mode? | Re: Win Backup - shadow copy
well, we know that there is a service via admin tools for volume shadow coping so possibly the service could be cycled between enable and disable and see if it helps to start it. also, as shadow copy requires some disk space as well, so this might be a factor when the backup tries to create a copy and fails. then, just like Mark stated, the application is failing to initiate the shadowing. here is a link that reiterates that: http://technet2.microsoft.com/Window....mspx?mfr=true with respect to your methodology of creating a backup copy of your data, i strongly recommend a more reliable method like "disk imaging". i have successfully used something called "drive image xml". in addition, you can incorporate into the methodology above something called "barts pe" and add the "drive image xml plug-in" good luck. -- db ·´¯`·.¸. , . .·´¯`·..><)))º>`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸.·´¯`·...¸><)))º>¸. ><)))º>·´¯`·.¸. , . .·´¯`·.. ><)))º>`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸.·´¯`·...¸><)))º> ..
