Where is this 'headphone jack'? Sounds like a hardware issue. (Why did you multipost? If you feel - in the future - your posting needs to be in multple groups, you would be better served by cross-posting instead.) |

| RE: Speakers work but headphones do not?
There are three different things that must be true for the headphone jack to function. 1) The cd drive with the jack in it has to have a small plug in the back attached to the soundcard with a rather thin wire. 2) The small volumn 'wheel' in the cd drive front face must be adjusted to loud enough. 3) The cd drive Properties (and properties tab) in device manager has a volumn slider. (start/run, type: devmgmt.msc, doubleclick the cd drive device, see properties tab and slider) |

Your #1 is incorrect! The CD's audio jack is not required to have the cable. This jack is "analog" and will play CD audio only. The thin cable is only required when you want to send the "analog" audio out thru the sound card. I have a laptop though and the jack in on the other side of the cd drive? |

| Re: Speakers work but headphones do not?
What the OP failed to mention which is CRITICAL information is that the computer in question is a laptop (as stated in a later post from them here and in their MULTIposted message in another newsgroup). The spkr jack on the laptop doesn't go through the CD drive in the laptop. It is like the headphone jack you find in some computer cases which requires that it be connected to a header on the motherboard (although some end up going out the back of the case to then plug into the backpanel jack). If the headphone jack is not connected then the headphones won't work and the speaker out (or internal speakers) won't get disconnected. Assuming the OP is plugging the headphones into the correct jack and that the jack doesn't require to be enabled in a mixer or other app provided with the laptop, could be the jack isn't connected. |

As VanguardLH points out in another branch of this thread, the fact that the speakers on your laptop fail to 'cut out' when you put in the jack indicate that the jack needs to be wired correctly by someone with the knowledge necessary to do it without damaging your laptop. You can't be so foolish to believe that someone is still monitoring a thread that lasted for only two days and that ended in January OVER A YEAR AGO. |

I have the exact same problem now. Did you ever find a soulition? Well you never know. Yes chances ARE low that someone is still montoring it, yes i am aware of that. but someone MIGHT actually reply. *******. Please quote some of the conversation you respond to in the future - for continuity. I assume you have somehow ruled out hardware issues? Here is the original (and current) conversation in its entirety: |

| Re: On VISTA Speakers work but headphones do not?
I had this problem on Vista when I plugged in headphones into the analog jack on my laptop. I could hear sound through the headphones, but the laptop speakers stopped working when the headphones were not plugged in to the laptop. Windows device manager couldn't find any problems with the headphones or the internal speakers. I did a backup on Vista's Backup and Restore Center that used all the laptop memory allocated on the laptop to drive D. I kept getting a error message pop-up that drive D was full - back up required. I need to buy new DVD-RW to do the new backup on external media and was putting off that task. I deleted all the files in my backup except the folder. Still no sound. Then I went in and deleted the whole folder and viola! The speakers began to work again. Don't ask me why! |
