Drive not accessible; file or directory corrupted

I am having a Windows XP based desktop since past 1 year and never had any problems. I have a 250 GB Hard drive divided into 3 partitions, that is C , D and E. This system was protected with CA Antivirus, which due to some reason, I uninstalled yesterday. To complete the uninstallation it asked for reboot. After rebooting the system, I am not able to access my D Drive anymore. Rest C and E are accessible but not the D drive. On Double clicking it gives the following error message:

    D:\ is not accessible
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

I have no idea what has happened. The drive contains several important Data. Somebody please help me fixing the same.

Hello Costas, just go through the following steps in order to get your drive accessible again:
    1. Go to Start and click RUN
    2. Type chkdsk /f <drive>:, where <drive> is the letter of the drive on which the damaged file, folder or file system index exists.
    3. Click OK.
