    Remove XP setup files manually?

I was installing Windows XP setup in preparation to install XP on a
second drive, when I realized that I needed to exit the install
without completing. Setup wasn't recognizing my function keys (F3 to
exit) so at the menu I did a cold reboot. Now every time I start my
computer I get a menu that allows me to select between Windows 2000
(my current operating system) and XP set up. However, if XP set up is
chosen, XP crashes with a note to run chkdsk. I have to assume that
when I powered off the computer I corrupted some of XP's temporary
installation files on my C: drive. Is there a way to uninstall the
files from XP set up manually? Thanks!

PS. I ran chkdsk and there was no change in the situation. I did do
an Acronis 11 total disk copy before I started this process, so would
recovering from this disk image solve my problem?

yes...just delete the setup folder and remove the reference to it in
    boot.ini

Where is the setup folder located? Also, search file showed
boot.ini.backup but not boot.ini -- should I change the backup to
boot.ini? Thanks! (Turns out I saved my disk image before I changed
the file system from FAT32 to NTFS . . . don't know what would happen
    if I restored it.)

OK, found boot.ini and I can take off the last line tacked on by
Windows XP Setup; but still not sure where the setup folder is and
    can't find it by search.

Since the file called in boot.ini was in C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT, I'm going to
assume that this is the Windows XP set up directory and rename the
directory just to find out. If you don't hear from me again, you'll
know what happened to my computer. :P

You were installing to your 2nd drive..thats where the setup files should
be.The line in Boot.ini should have pointed to that aborted installation.

It never got far enough to ask me what drive I wanted to put it on, so
the files were on the C: drive. The directory I listed appears to
have been the right one. It now boots to Windows 2000 as before, and
I am ready to try the install of XP to the second hard drive again
once I figure out how to make XP boot off of a SATA drive. Thanks!
You put me on the right road.
