No sound from laptop speakers. (amends previous question)

Am running XP Media on a Dell Inspiron 9400. For past few days, I have no
sound at all (inc system sounds) coming out of the internal laptop speakers
but do
have sound if I plug in headphones to audio out jack .
Have done all the basic checks, tested sound/audio settings, checked for new
device driver plus have run the Windows troubleshooter. Have also tried
restoring system to last known configuration - still no joy. Tried system
restore utility - but system could not restore to any point I selected.

How do I get sound back to the speakers? Any suggestions welcome - thanks.

Please do not start a new thread on the same subject. Simply responding in the
original thread that the speakers are internal would have sufficed.

What "basic checks" did you perform?
Did you test the audio/sound with dxdiag?
Is the proper device listed in Device Manager?
Are there any Unknown or Other devices listed in Device Manager?
Is your device listed in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio tab?
Did you run the Dell Audio Issue Troubleshooter? 7th item listed at link below.
