Can you go to microsoft.com and search for the updates that you want to install manually. You can also install each of the months security patch disc if you have a DVD Rom burner to solve this problem. Check the below link for more information:

I have recently upgraded from Windows XP SP2 to Windows XP Pro. It was all fine, but ever since Windows Updates have downloaded but not installed. It was trying to install them, but gives up with the message 'Some updates could not be installed'. I then rebooted the machine quite a few times after that. When checked in the Windows Update log file then it ends with the error 0x80004002 and also contains error 800704dd several times.

Check the below solution to solve this issue:
    1. First of all Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: net stop wuauserv
    3. Now try to register the Wups2.dll file. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
Note: For a computer that is running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, type the following command, and then press ENTER: regsvr32 %windir%\syswow64\wups2.dll
    4. Now try to click OK on each verification message that you receive.
    5. After that try to start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, type the following command at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
      net start wuauserv
    6. Now you have to exit the command prompt. To do this type exit, and then press ENTER.
