    msconfig - access denied error

If I want to make some changes in msconfig, then I am getting an access denied error. I am the only user and admin of my laptop which is running on Windows XP. I dont use any HP printer driver or zonealarm. I just use the McAfee antivirus program. Even in Safe Mode, it will not work if I try to make any changes. After contacting the tech support I was told to recover my laptop. So, does anyone know what is wrong with my laptop? Thanks.

Re: msconfig - access denied error

I have seen this problem many times that is happening due to spyware or some other malware in the system. So can you check your system with some good antivirus software and see if it detects any viruses. You can try to go for the registry fix and see if that works.

Re: msconfig - access denied error

You need to go to the below registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Pml Driver HPZ12

incase you have the pml driver HPZ12 service, Pml Driver HPZ12 might also be lited in Services.msc.

Thanks for the replies, I do not have any of the mentioned HP drivers installedo n my laptop. The only fix as told by the tech support of the laptop was to do a destructive recovery of my laptop. I am going to do the same and hope that it works out for me. Thanks.

The error that you are getting can happen while trying to use msconfig to disable the True Vector Internet Monitor service (vsmon.exe). Also, if you have zonealarm then dont load it, you will need to turn off the "OS firewall" in zonealarm and see if that works for you or not.

I had a similar problem. the issues were
    a) restarting the system when msconfig was changed and not deleting the registry entry
    b) ALso trojanware that inserted entries back in msconfig-> startup
