| My "File->New->Create compressed (ZIP) folder menu entry does not exist" ?
I want to create a zip (=compressed) folder in WinXP. On some web pages I read that the normal way of creating such a compressed folder would be either by using the Windows Explorer or the context menu and choose the entry File->New->Create (compressed) folder. Unfortunately this menu entry does not exist on my WinXP system How can I re-create it ? Is there another way of creating a zip folder ? BTW: Can I select the zip compression rate (as in separate zip tools) or is this fixed built-in ? Frank |

You might want to look at "enhanced" xipping tools like 7-Zip (Open Source) or WinZip (purchase.) |

Courtesy of Doug Knox, MS-MVP Windows XP File Association Fixes http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm Scroll down to the bottom. Download and run the Zip folder association fix. If that doesn't work, you might want to try the fixes outlined on these web sites. Hi Frank, Remove all your File Compression programs. (WinZip or WinRAR or others) Reboot your computer. -- thecreator "Frank Callone" <inn200@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:47136fcf$0$30368$9b4e6d93@newsspool4.arcor-online.net... >I want to create a zip (=compressed) folder in WinXP. > > On some web pages I read that the normal way of creating such a compressed > folder would be > either by using the Windows Explorer or the context menu and choose the > entry > > File->New->Create (compressed) folder. > > Unfortunately this menu entry does not exist on my WinXP system > > How can I re-create it ? > > Is there another way of creating a zip folder ? > > BTW: Can I select the zip compression rate (as in separate zip tools) > or is this fixed built-in ? > > Frank > |

Go to Window Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types/Scroll down to Zip (If it doesn't exist, create it). Highlight it, click Edit, place a check mark in the box that reads confirm after download. Also Edit the Open Command to re-associate it with the program that you are using to extract Zip files. Alternatively you can locate a zip file, hold down the shift key, open with and choose from the list. Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.zip In the right pane, double click PerceivedType and change it to: compressed If that still doesn't restore the function, use this edit: Restore Compressed Zipped Folders Assoc./Functionality (Line 85) http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm -- All the Best, Kelly (MS-MVP/DTS&XP) Taskbar Repair Tool Plus! http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm "Frank Callone" <inn200@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:47136fcf$0$30368$9b4e6d93@newsspool4.arcor-online.net... > > Frank > |
