You need a Windows XP CD and must make the BIOS Boot order such that CD device ( CD/DVD Drive) boots BEFORE the hard disk drive in the Boot order (boot sequence) in the BIOS setup menu. If you have WinXP CD in the drive, reboot and when the Monitor screen displays "Press any Key to boot from the CD", IMMEDIATELY press any key on the Keyboard and wait and watch the screen to display "Welcome to Setup". In that screen press "R" to select repair option using the Recovery Console. You may have to press ENTER to select C:\Windows or Winnt where your OS resides.

You will have to type your Admin Password if any made and ENTER or just ENTER if no admin password is created in this system. At the Command prompt, type Chkdsk / r and [ENTER] (Note the single space after "Checkdsk" and before "/r") ]to check the hard disk file system for errors and repair it. After that on Command prompt, type Exit and press [ENTER] reboot. If this does not solve the BSOD STOP ERROR, repeat the Repair in Recovery Console but at the command prompt in Recovery Console type "Fixboot" [without quotes] command instead of "Chkdisk /r" to repair the Boot sector of your HDD and the EXIT> reboot.

At the time of boot, check very closely at the screen. There might be something like "Press a key to boot from CD", the message may not be up long and you must press the key in that time or you can get the message you describe.

DEL for something F2 for BIOS F12 for boot menu
i press F12 takes me to the boot menu with choices 1. Hard Drive 2. CD ROM 3. Floppy 4. Realtek AGENT.
I go to the CD ROM, press option and i get the "Operating System not Working" screem.

I think that 12 for boot menu and then 2 for CD is what you want. Are you sure the drive works? Try the Windows XP CD in another drive/computer. Did you verify the drive works and the CD is good?

Well, it could be possibly a bad drive or memory. Both can cause similar issues. Incase you have any hardware that did not originally come with the computer connected/installed, then try to remove it. If it is still in warranty, contact the manufacturer.

    Operating System Not Found

I have an old Compaq Presario that has Windows 98 SE installed on it. Everytime I start up computer it shows operating system not found error. It will not go to windows no matter what I do. I tried to install a newer version of windows and it started to install the files and then it stopped. I then received the error message that setup could not detect the hard drive and could not complete set up. It is like windows is not detecting my hard drive.
What can I do? Please help me.

i agree the most important cause of this type of failure is hard drive crash . Another reason might be corrupt windows. Try checking hard drive cables and if the problem persists , try reinstalling windows.

    Thanks

Thank you for your responses. I appreciate the help
I have made sure all cables are connected and tried to re-install windows and no success. I know how to get to the BIOS settings but I am not sure where to look to see if it is detecting my hard drive.

    Hard drive

The hard drive is operating fine. I had a friend of mine who is an IT specialist test it and it is working fine. I tried to install another version of windows and for some reason it keeps telling me that it can not detect any hard disk drives on the computer and then it will end the setup and restart the computer. How do I find out what my BIOS setttings should be and if it is detecting my hard drive? I have tried everything I could think of to get it up and running and nothing seems to help.
