Cannot start Windows. Missing or corrupt boot file

I have a Windows XP Pro running desktop which was working fine until last night when I turned it off. Today morning when I started the system, I booted fine but as soon as it reached the desktop suddenly the screen tuned Black and I received the following error message:

“Windows cannot start because of a missing or corrupt boot file \Windows\Sys32\Config\System”

Somebody suggested me to repair the system in order to fix this issue. I rebooted, inserted my Installation disc and press ‘R’ when prompted for repair. But now I don’t know what else I need to do ahead of this. Can anyone please tell what I need to do next?

    Please help.
